OK, just saw the Rail concept plans, http://dpti.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf ... esign2.pdf, hopefully the proposed bus interchange becomes a reality.

Imagine how much better the bus service could be if all Main South Rd and Flagstaff Hill buses catered for city-bound (via train), flinders and marion passengers on each bus route. (More Go Zones anyone! ;p)

Thankfully you are not in charge.

In my mind for this to truely succeed, they need to properly connect goodwood station with the tram. This would open up the southern half of the CBD to these passengers. If they work anywhere not within walking distance of ARS, then catching the train into town isn't ideal.

In this key location, the bus interchange (and car park) needs to have a capacity similar to Paradise or TTP interchanges. Needs to be safe, sheltered and well-designed.

You're right, it's a terrible intersection and that chunk of South Road around Edwardstown is horrible even outside of peak times.

But an roundabout? Really? Do you want to improve that intersection of make it worse?

If the Darlington-Emerson section will be elevated, Daws Rd access may be via surface South Road only.

I doubt they would have Darlington-Emerson with no entry/exit points.

I'd imagine that Daws Rd would be a full interchange between the elevated and surface roadways. I also wouldn't be surprised if there is a partial interchange (perhaps exit only) around the Castle Plaza/Raglan Avenue area. All of this is of course hypothesising and there's no way of knowing until initial plans are released..

They should rip the traffic lights out and chuck a few stop/giveway signs in. It's sure to work!

The bigger question is.... where does DPTI see the SE Freeway connecting with the NS Motorway? Got to be either Emerson via Cross rd, or Richmond via Greenhill and Glen Osmond Rds. I have posted on why the latter is better, also extending down to the airport, but I recall reading about the plans for this section not including an interchange being too close to Galipoli underpass.

If the govt is serious about the industry and business benefits of road infrastructure and linking investments they need to consider this issue.

I think Richmond makes far more sense but if not there then I'm all for a major flyover at-grade interconnect at Emerson.

Reckon Cross Road would ever be turned into a cross-city expressway one day?

While I definitely agree that some sort of interchange with the South Eastern Freeway is needed, any such interchange would require a massive amount of land, something which I'm not sure could be done..

This is a quick mockup I did in about 5 minutes. I looked at the land requirements for the Northern Connector/Superway/PREXY interchange, overlaying this area at the Emerson Crossing.

Image

Bearing in mind, the Northern Connector/Superway/PREXY interchange is a full interchange, with traffic coming from 4 directions. Any NS Corridor interchange and South Eastern Freeway would likely have traffic coming from just 3 directions. As such, a full interchange may not take up as much space as depicted above.

Prexy/superway isn't a full interchange, you can't turn north onto the connector from the Prexy

Yeah I did the same a while ago. One of the many reasons why a Richmond interchange would be better. It would fit nicely in the triangle with James congdon drive extension.

No chance. Land values too high and not enough room at Emerson. Richmond however. .... Maybe I'll write up my ideas and start a new Vision thread.

I don't see it ever connecting with the SE Freeway. It would make more sense to connect the bottom of the Southern Expressway with Victor Harbor road and a new expressway through Strathalbyn to connect with the Princess Highway at Tailem Bend. Then trucks wouldn't have to go up or down the hills. (But good luck getting Mclaren Vale to agree to a freeway through the vineyards)

Not to mention, we'd find ourselves back in MATS plan era where the south-eastern suburbs would complain that they shouldn't be touched by such a project.

Personally (and I've always felt this should be the case); freeway along Glen Osmond Road and Fullarton Road, connecting to a freeway grade city ring route (replace West Terrace with a new roadway over the train yards), connect North-South motorway through Mile End, and then if EVER the O'Bahn corridor became a freeway you could connect that also. City ring route freeway would be trenched to avoid isolating the suburbs from the city grid.

Aren't we getting ahead of ourselves a bit here? Do we really need a network of freeways connected up? Some better arterials, sure, but we don't need flyovers and trenches funnelling cars all over the city. The North/South corridor is going to be grossly over-engineered as it is.
