In one word, rent. Apparently it is one of the only company owned stores that has to pay rent.mike25 wrote: Anyone know the reason or what might be taking its place?

Had a feeling it would be rent related. Always seemed to be busy there , interesting to see what takes its place

They're moving to the new store on Brighton road.
I've also heard maccas in the food court might be leaving too

Looking forward to a free-flowing Adelaide!

My understanding of the redevelopment is that the entire food court will be moving, but this could have changed. One of the food court tenancies (former JJ's Italian next to Maccas has been vacant for over a year. Very unusual for a Westfield food court to have such a long standing vacancy.
As the Dick Smith store is one of their large format stores it will be interesting to see what sort of shop takes over the space. it probably would have been perfect for Aldi but they are already building their new home in the market precinct.

The rumour is that Apple is sniffing around this site.Ben wrote:My understanding of the redevelopment is that the entire food court will be moving, but this could have changed. Yeah I would think Apple is a strong candidate for the Dick Smith site

I'm surprised the former Marion HJ's was company owned given they had many different policies to other HJ's the last time I was there - free refills on large drinks only, $10 minimum on EFTPOS, and the staff still called each order over the microphone rather than just go on what on the screen.muzzamo wrote:In one word, rent. Event Cinemas would be rubbing their hands in glee at HJ's demise - given how many people would grab their drinks from there instead of the candy bar. I guess you still have Subway there for cheaper drinks.

Mcdonalds has now closed down in the food court. 2 of the biggest fast food restaurants around have now gone because of Westfield. There's no sign giving an explanation either.
I can't remember if it was mentioned before but there's also a big solar panel project happening in the carpark outside the Kmart section. A big section of the carpark was closed today

That McDonald's has been in that location in the food court since at least 1989.
Very strange it should suddenly close with no explanation!
There used to be another McDonald's as well as that one, which was downstairs near Woolworths when the last major redevelopment happened.
You'd almost think Westfield had gone anti-fast-food or something! (Either that, or it's April fools day).

Can't be purely about money. I guess the two franchises were probably quietly told to "leave".

McDonald’s and Hungry Jack’s close within weeks at Westfield Marion shopping centre

ADELAIDE’S largest shopping centre is without either a McDonald’s or Hungry Jack’s restaurant after both chains closed their outlets within weeks of each other.
Westfield Marion’s Hungry Jack’s shut up shop on March 7 and McDonald’s served its final Big Mac on March 31.
Westfield SA regional manager Malcolm Creswell said the closures were “just the normal course of events” at a shopping centre.
“Both their leases have expired and they chose at this stage to leave the centre,” Mr Creswell said.
Hungry Jack’s was in one of the centre’s most prominent shopfronts, next to the second-level carpark, near the cinema.
A sign outside the store says Westfield “can’t wait to reveal who’s coming”, although Mr Creswell would not give details.
Westfield Marion’s Facebook page said the two fast-food chains’ sites would be filled with “exciting new casual dining spots”.
A spokeswoman for Hungry Jack’s would not say why the store closed.
She said all Marion staff were offered positions at other restaurants.
A sign outside the closed Marion shop said it was moving to Brighton Rd, South Brighton, where a new $3.3 million store opened last week.
A spokeswoman for McDonald’s Australia also would not say why its Marion store closed.
She said the company was open to looking at other nearby spots for a new restaurant. All employees had been moved to other nearby shops.
Hungry shoppers have questioned the reasons for the closures of both burger stores on Twitter and Westfield Marion’s Facebook page.
Several have posted to Westfield Marion’s Facebook page asking why it has gone.
Hannah Worden said she was “distraught”.
“The only way to remedy this is to bring Zambreros,” Ms Worden said.
Westfield Marion is in the midst of a $350 million, five-year redevelopment, which includes a new fresh food precinct and an Aldi supermarket.
With 325 businesses and 133,852 sq m of retail space, Westfield Marion is South Australia’s largest shopping centre and one of the largest in Australia.

She must be the same person who is "distraught" and "confused" about having to navigate around a signalised roundabout at Grange/South Road

Not doubt it has something to do with the fact that Westfield's rates are ridiculous and because this clean eating fad is catching on and slowing down business for the big fast-food chains (at-least amongst those who shop at these centres).
