Some pictures taken 10 Apr 2016.
1 laying bitumen on hackney Rd where the centre island used to be.
2 piling on Dequetteville Tce just south of Botanic Rd
3 the path cleared through the parklands from Grenfell St looking east. On the right hand side (under the big tree) where the land slopes down on each side is where the original tram track used to be.

FACT:

If you could do away with the O-Bahn City Access Project, then you could do away with over 50,000 jobs.
The Festival State that we all fondly love is in dire need of jobs and the new O-Bahn Tunnel from Hackney Rd to Grenfell St is a definite Must-Have!

It's a bit late now to be debating whether we do it or not

RAA advocacy.
How the O-Bahn Tunnel will cut travel times to the city
Motorists are being urged to be patient while work on the O-Bahn Tunnel is rolled out....
... with the project to see the O-Bahn system extended from the end of the busway at Gilberton into the cross-city priority bus lane on Grenfell Street.

"Given this project will take at least a year to complete, we anticipate many motorists who regularly use this route will find it challenging at times,” said Charles Mountain, RAA Senior Manager Road Safety.

However, we must remember the sheer size of this project, and the long-term benefits it will create for commuters – both on the road and on public transport – once it’s completed.”
Road congestion, delays.
DPTI reports show the average bus speeds on Hackney Road can be as low as 20km/h, and even lower at 8km/h on North Tce, with 25 per cent of the delays being clocked up at intersections.

"Buses are currently getting stuck in traffic with general commuters and at intersections, while passengers are regularly delayed by peak hour traffic and city bound traffic is queuing back all the way to Bundeys Road along Hackney Road."
"These issues can be alleviated by taking the O-Bahn under Rundle Street and Rymill Park, as is proposed.”

The project will also include the creation of priority bus lanes along Hackney Road, with an expected completion date for the entire project in the second half of 2017.
More than 31,000 O-Bahn bus passengers and more than 79,000 vehicles travel this section of the city ring route daily.

"The O-Bahn tunnel will provide a quicker and more reliable route for bus commuters, and reduce traffic congestion and delays for vehicles using the Inner City Ring Route,” said Mr Mountain.

Sheet piling is taking place on Dequeteville Tce. These piles interlock with one another and are then driven to the required depth to protect the tunnel walls .

Apparently the footbridge idea has been scrapped.
