Outer Harbour would be another logical location for a Heliport to shuffle people to and from cruise ships to the city, Barrossa, and KI. I recently heard a news story where people disembarking at Outer Harbour were disappointed to discover KI was too far to visit with limited time.

It may not be quite that simple, depending on where it's going, I know when they were doing some preliminary planning for one on the top of the Children's hospital, as well as the engineering to strengthen the roof, there was a requirement for the structure to have tanks to handle a fuel leak and more then more tanks and firefighting equipment. Obviously may not apply if it's just landing on the parklands?

Push for helipad in middle of Adelaide CBD by city council



MORE than two years after the idea first took flight, Adelaide City Council will seek expressions of interest to install a helipad in the CBD, preferably on the Riverbank precinct.

A helipad would attract tourists and high roller Adelaide Casino clients to take joy flights direct from the city to the wine regions and Kangaroo Island.

The idea has been grounded since Housssam Abiad last brought it to the council in September of last year when he asked council administration explore the viability of the project.

A frustrated Mr Abiad said he would now seek private interests to try to get the helipad idea off the ground.

“Let’s put it out to market and see who is interested,” he said.

“I still haven’t seen a report on the subject I asked for last year and basically, at best, all we have to do is lease a piece of land or a pontoon on the river ... so I’ve got to a point where enough is enough — we’re going out to an expression of interest and see what the market is going to do.

Mr Abiad said that in light of other councils spruiking the idea, the city — which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year — should move on a project like this.

“Recently, Glenelg announced in their masterplan that they want to have a helipad there,” he said.

“We, too, should be seriously exploring this — there’s opportunities for us to take groups to Kangaroo Island, taking kids for a bird’s view eye of the city and much more. All we have to do is see who out there is interested in running such an operation because ultimately we’re connecting the city to the regions.”

The Intercontinental Hotel and Adelaide Casino have previously been supportive of a helipad, which they believe is a great selling point and would attract high-rollers to the CBD.

Last month, businessman Dr Sam Shahin expressed support for a Torrens helipad, saying that the more hustle and bustle there was on the city’s river, the better.

Mr Abiad said a number of groups were also interest in exploring the option.

“Helistar is one operation I know of that are definitely interested,” he said. “There has been others too who have flagged interest. This idea can be backed — and we need to give them a go.”

I get it's just a journo hitting the stock photo archive using 'helicopter' and 'adelaide' as key word searches but I still think it's in poor taste using a MedStar rescue helicopter touching down at a hospital when discussing helicopters being used to ferry the rich to a casino.

And really, our airport is literally a 15 minute drive outside of peak times to the CBD. Tourists who want a helicopter to the Barossa can get it straight from the airport - at no cost to the taxpayer - right now. I'm pretty sure if a 15 minute ride in a limo from airport to CBD is holding back high rollers I'm not sure replacing it with a similar helicopter ride (once you allow for boarding etc) timewise is a great drawcard.

Of all the things that the ACC could be spending money on - with a real, tangible benefit to the city - this has to be one of the lowest priorities ever. TBH the casino should pay for it and add a helipad to their new design if it's that important.

Be interesting if a properly scoped feasibility study is ever commissioned. I suspect the result would be "meh".

How about instead moving the boat sheds from the other side of the bridge over to this area and making a rowing hub out of it?

There are some renders somewhere of this area after the completion of the Riverbank precinct, showed the site being used for festivals and such. I think the first two things that should be done is removing the carpark and establishing a green/to train line boundary that sees a lot of that gravel area next to the lines removed. I get the need for service vehicles and such, but there is plenty of room underneath the Morphett Bridge for all of that. I also think it would be quite smart if they could figure out a way to change the entry point to the Convention Centre and have it run down this area under the bridge through the back way as to allow the roadway in front of the centre to be closed and pedestrianised...
