Possibly, but I've seen him do more than the previous one.[Shuz] wrote:Michael Deegan? Hah. You mean think ahead?OlympusAnt wrote:If they were serious about level crossing safety etc. they would have removed it properly back in 2008 when Oaklands was originally "upgraded"
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.
[COM] Re: PRO: Oaklands Rail Overpass
Okay im all for Oaklands and flinders link but how can 650 meters of above ground rail line cost 80 million and a overpass at Oaklands cost over 3 times as much . both have stations to be built . Is the Oaklands project also the Brighton road crossing as well or are the roads at Morphett and diagonal going to be grade seperated??
[COM] Re: PRO: Oaklands Rail Overpass
The image posted by ml69 indicates that design to date hasn't had the benefit of experienced rail designers. Firstly, Vic and NSW no longer build curved platforms, because of the larger gap between train and platform , and because the driver can't see all the passengers boarding. Secondly, side platforms mean that 4 lifts need to be constructed and maintained. Would it not be better to construct the station as an island platform, and on a straight section of track (ie on the Adelaide side of the crossing). This way, only 2 lifts need to be built and maintained.
In Victoria, island platforms on grade separations are being promoted as safer, because there are potentially twice as many people on the platform at times of low useage.

The renders we have seen are preliminary drawings accompanying a limited study, the actual design and location could be much different. However, a rail overpass is pretty much guaranteed.

The South Australian government is, bizarrely, considering a rail spur line from Oaklands to Marion Westfield.
Surely a regular bus service could do the same thing (what about a regular 15 minute service between Oaklands, Marion Westfild and then Flinders Medical Centre?)

State Government considering a spur line to Westfield Marion as part of Oaklands Crossing upgrade
THE State Government says a rail spur line could be built to Westfield Marion as part of plans to upgrade Oaklands Crossing.
But the State Opposition says the idea is “bizarre” and the local mayor believes it will never happen.
Premier Jay Weatherill said this was “one of the options” being considered in designs for the $190 million crossing project.

I agree, It's a very left field idea.PeFe wrote:The South Australian government is, bizarrely, considering a rail spur line from Oaklands to Marion Westfield.

Regarding the bus service, this is already done by bus route 300, which has a 15 minute daytime and 30 minute nighttime frequency between Flinders Uni and Glenelg on weekdays, and a 30 minute frequency between Marion and Glenelg on weekends.

I KIND OF like the idea but I'd need to see more details to decide yes or no.
[COM] Re: PRO: Oaklands Rail Overpass
I am confused. Has the quoted article been subsequently updated? There is now no mention of a spur line to Marion Centre but reference to moving the Seaford line closer to the shopping centre.PeFe wrote:The South Australian government is, bizarrely, considering a rail spur line from Oaklands to Marion Westfield.

Probably just another hair brain scheme to shore up the proposed on again, off again expansion of Westfield Marion.
Similar to the announcement of the tram extension a few hundred metres east on North Terrace, aimed at making
the redevelopment of the old RAH site more attractive to private investment.

A spur line to Marion would be bizzare as the cost would be huge with not much benefit. There is already a spur line to Tonsley that supports the Seaford Line's inner stations, allowing the train from Seaford to run express from Woodlands Park.
Maybe The Advertiser misunderstood the media release or interview with the MP. Moving closer to the shopping centre might simply mean a footbridge across the intersection straight to Laffer's Triangle (the site of the swimming centre).

Unless I'm going blind, but I can't see any mention of a 'spur line' in the News.com.au link
THE State Government says the Seaford train line could be extended closer to Westfield Marion as part of plans to upgrade Oaklands crossing.
Premier Jay Weatherill said moving the train line closer to the centre was “one of the options” being considered in designs for the $190 million crossing project, but this week ruled out the construction of a line directly to the mall.
