Meanwhile in Mt Barker and everywhere else shops are opened to at least 11pm 7 days a week...

I don't usually agree with ghs, but he is completely right on this one. Adelaide's trading hours are f*cked and needs an overhaul.

Seems like quite a few of the locals on this forum disagree with me.
This situation is not a problem for the locals, it's a problem for the tourists.
A lot of the tourists wouldn't expect the supermarkets to close early on the weekends and they end
up in a difficult situation.
It's not good for our reputation, the tourist that I met a couple of weeks ago that complained about this issue
was pretty negative about Adelaide.

As a state that is struggling economically we should be doing everything that we can to support tourism.

The supermarkets can trade at 2am on a tuesday morning but then they can't trade at 630pm on a saturday night ???
Ridiculous.
Adelaide City council is a joke.

The opening hours for supermarkets are based on its size and location.


Big ones in the metro area are able to open from midnight Monday to Saturday, and 11am on Sundays. They must close by 9pm Monday to Friday and 5pm Saturday and Sunday.


Small supermarkets and those in rural locations (yes, Mt. Barker is a rural location) are able to open from 6am (maybe midnight, I'm not sure) and close by 11pm everyday except Christmas Day.


I believe this was done to protect smaller, local supermarkets.


That's my understanding of the regulations anyway.

My apologies for blaming the Adelaide City Council.

It's still ridiculous that a supermarket in a country town like Mt. Barker can trade on saturday and sunday nights
while the supermarkets in the CBD have to close early.

At the risk of union-bashing, this has always been the SDA's play thing in South Australia. Business council is always keen for deregulated trading, the productivity commission and other federal bodies have repeatedly ragged on south Australia for maintaining the restrictions, but the shoppies have always fought the idea off. Lol, why do you think they ban supermarkets from opening until 11 on a sunday?

Mt barker specifically is a designated regional town, which is exempt from most of the restrictions.

As mentioned before Priceline Pharmacies will be moving into the old Dick Smith space in Gawler Place, signage is now up.

Credit Union SA on Grenfell St has moved to 400 King William St.
Yet another dick move!
Grenfell St still looks dysfunctional compared with yesteryear.

Eh? The Grenfell St branch may be closing, but the head office & branch has been at 400 KWS for 4 years or so. It was even covered on this forum when they bought up the naming rights and put their signage up.

Spotlight will be vacating Level 2 Rundle Mall Plaza in the next 4 weeks or so.

Levels 1 and 2 will then be vacant which is a sizeable space in a prominent spot with direct access through to the Myer Centre.

Granted, it's not at ground level but I reckon the two floors together would easily be big enough for a large TopShop or a medium-sized H&M. If only...

Won't happen, both floors are far too isolated from the mall for such brands to even consider it. Personally, I think said brands are too picky but I guess there is probably the fear that once the hype comes down from their splash onto the local market that their business will quickly dwindle. I don't think we'll see a stand-alone TopShop outlet in the mall anytime soon considering they're now in Myer; sure, it may not have anywhere near the range that a stand-alone store would have but they're probably measuring the success on their Myer outlet which at this point has been mediocre.

I always remember when David Jones were in the Rundle Mall Plaza building, it was all quite open, how did they go so wrong when they 'upgraded' it... I think we'll likely see development on the City X site once the sale has taken place and that will be the big chance for the big fashion retailers to nab up sizeable retail space.

Yes the isolation of those two floors leans toward conversion to office space, like the rest of the upper floors of that building.

If I didn't like certain elements of the buildings exterior facing onto Rundle Mall, I'd have been all for the idea of converting all the upper floors into apartments, perhaps even consuming the neighbouring carpark and Gawler Chambers into such a project. It would certainly help curb the occupancy issues they're having in parts of the mall.

I work in the building and can honestly say I don't like any aspect of the building's exterior facing onto Rundle Mall. Yeah it's got some marble on it but you know the old saying: you can put some marble cladding onto a big square turd but at the end of the day it's still a big square turd. :wink:

That aside, all four office floors are newly refurbished and fully occupied. I don't think the upper retail floors are too far separated from the mall to be unviable - ideally larger/more prominent escalators could be put in as the current one leading up is rather tiny. More ambitiously, perhaps some of the marble cladding could be removed from the first floor and replaced with glass to make a very prominent retail frontage? Not sure about the feasibility of this but it could work.

With regards to city apartments, there are many empty heritage buildings that could work really well as apartments if only the regulations could be relaxed to allow it - the Pharmacy Building directly opposite Rundle Mall Plaza for a start. I've sat at my desk staring at its empty upper floors for several years now. Such a waste.
