forgive me for saying I'll believe it when I see it. The State govt has shown it takes the votes of the Northern suburbs for granted and I reckon if they thought they could get away with delaying it again to put the money into marginal seats closer to the 2018 election they would do so.

Doesn't every government pull those tricks?
Personally I think they should just bite the debt bullet and borrow the money to finish the electrification off, and start the whole AdeLink tram network extensions.
Get it all underway before the 2018 election, because there's no guarantee they'll stay in power after 2018, even as pathetic as the opposition is. Because the Liberals wont fund tram extensions and train electrification. And start every other stage of the North-South corridor too. Go as big as possible before possible being thrown out of office. At least if they cared about the state they'd make sure these projects get going before their opposition possibly gets into power and grinds everything to a halt.
Not to turn this into a political discussion, but I have a strong fear that if we don't get these things started soon, and Labor lose 2018, the Liberals will pull the pin on whatever they can and any other plans will be trashed, using the federal parties script book of blaming Labor for a huge debt and a need to cut expenses everywhere.

Staging projects over a staggered timeframe is important for many reasons. Firstly, it ensures there is no boom-and-bust cycle in the construction industry. If that happens, there will be dodgy work by inexperienced contractors, as we saw with the insulation rollout. Secondly, it will also keep traffic disruption to a minimum as only sections of the projects are interrupted, not bringing the whole city to a stand still.

Just out of interest, what happened to all of the trees on North Terrace? I know we have plane trees now but the ones in the above photo look much older. Were they all cut down at some point and then later replanted or are they the same trees?

The elms in Prince Henry Gardens (in front of Government House) are probably the same, but I imagine the rest either became senescent and were replaced or were otherwise replaced as part of the North Terrace upgrades. My memory doesn't stretch back far enough to know when or why though. But I will say the current population of plane trees does not appear well cared for by the council...

Yes, they are the go-to tree the world over. They are fast growing and very resistant to air pollution. And certainly look brilliant when the entire street is consistently planted with them.
