Fact check: Has Frome St bikeway been a “massive failure”?
Frome Street bikeway has been a political disaster for the Adelaide City Council – but what does the evidence say about the bikeway itself?
Last week, city councillors declared the $1.6 million Frome Street bikeway had been a “massive failure” and a waste of ratepayers’ money, removing any lingering doubt about the council’s intention to demolish it.

It was catharsis for the council, which after years of vitriolic debate had come to something like a consensus – the bikeway had failed, and it needed to be “fixed” (read: dismantled and replaced).

While all councillors have been at pains to emphasise their support for cycling infrastructure generally, they are no-longer willing to tolerate the protected bike lane and the connected parking lane – framed by cement curbs – occupying one former driving lane on each side of the road.

But before jackhammer meets cement, and despite the politics, it must be acknowledged that the bulk of available empirical evidence and expert opinion shows Frome Street bikeway to have been an overwhelmingly successful piece of public infrastructure...

Precisely what I've been concerned about. A substandard car-dooring lane becomes the template for the standard of infrastructure that's rolled out across the city. Obviously it's unrealistic to expect the degree of separation on frome st to be used broadly throughout the city, but basically we're heading back to painted lines creating imaginary separation.

Also, who are the so-called "traders" that hate the bike way so much?

The midnight pharmacy? Local government house? Enzo's automotive?

It's not exactly high street along there.

I'd say most definitely them. Many times I've ridden along, and a car outside their driveway is stopped across the bike lane.

Work has begun on developing a new parking app and smart-parking technology that will help people find available on-street car parks in Adelaide's CBD.

The Adelaide City Council has budgeted almost $3 million to develop the app and install in-ground sensors under all 3,200 on-street car parks throughout the city.

Those sensors will be able to detect when vehicles enter and exit the parking spaces and measure how long vehicles remain in the parking space, vacancy rates and the turnover.

Good to know there's always money in the banana stand for making it easier for people to park their furniture on the street.

Adelaide City Council will formally acknowledge Colonel William Light’s “vision for Adelaide” at the start of every future meeting, despite complaints the current length of meetings was already ruining councillors' dinner plans and sapping their “will to live”.

It certainly shouldn't cost thousands of dollars and be required to go through multiple government departments for assessment.

Not sure where to pop this and apologies if it's been covered but does anyone know of any plans to upgrade the public amenities/street furniture/road surface etc of Peel St?

Walked down there today and it looks like the businesses have gone a long way towards "activating" it but the street itself is looking tired and unwelcoming.

They recently added more lighting, which makes the street look very inviting at night in my opinion. However, I'm sure the case for a street upgrade would be stronger if they actually closed it permanently, which is what some councillors are advocating.

Which councillors? As far as I know, the whole mob are fine with the status quo and not advocating for meaningful progress,
