I don't see any need for a northern stand. Sure, a Commonwealth Games argument may strengthen the case for it, but then what?

Capacity isn't a real issue yet or soon - we can seat 53,500 and even Perth's new stadium is only 60,000. When it does become an issue, they can look at augmenting the the Western Stand. The Hill needn't and shouldn't be touched.

Capacity isn't an issue?

Have you been under a rock? Adele's concert got 70,000, a stadium record. Which is 16,500 over capacity!

53,500 is the seated capacity. You can't sell tickets to stand on the grass during a footy game. They managed to squeeze 80,000 at AAMI for the Robbie Williams concert

The playing surface at Adelaide oval roughly 16,000 square metres. Assuming you lose 5,000 sq. metres for staging, walkways, etc, you can fit around 38,000 people onto the playing surface. This is 3.5 people per sq. metre which is rated towards the upper limit of safe and comfortable standing capacity. Add the 53,000 seats, and that gives Adelaide oval a theoretical concert capacity of 91,000.

Obviously, there are quite a few assumptions in that. If the stage takes up a larger area, you lose capacity. You may not be able to sell all 53,000 seats for a concert as viewing may be impeded from some. And probably the largest one, if temporary seating is placed onto the playing surface, this would reduce the capacity quite significantly.

All in all, Adele would have come pretty close to having the oval at capacity.

Not sure if that's correct. The Adele concert is being reported as the biggest concert ever held in SA. The whole tour has smashed records across the country.

I agree it shouldn't be touched.

And as it stands, it needn't be touched. Sold out stadiums with membership waiting lists is the gold standard in world sport. The AFL teams get much higher $ per member compared to their Victorian counterparts because the sold out membership reduces churn rates and forces supporters to take up reserved seats.

If demand did warrant an expansion, a bid if, then I don't really buy that the hill needn't be touched. If you were to expand the ground and choose to build over the western stand instead of on the ground at the northern end then you would have the issue of choosing the highest cost option pressuring the margins on the tickets that are hardest to sell (selling the first 10k tickets it a lot easier than selling the next 10k after you have already sold 53k before).

The Oval is fine as is. Get to work on upgrading Hindmarsh for the sport played the most by people in the country.

What's that got to do with Hindmarsh? Playing doesn't equal watching.

Imagine all the massive grandstands we could install for the second most played sport, golf.
