I feel like we have lucked out... the designs of the buildings mentioned are far superior. I know we are in a very different place but... sigh. I'm sorry I can't get behind a 100+ blank wall in such a vital part of our city.
Congrats Ben on it finally happening for you!

As bad as a blank wall is, at least only half is visible from the square. Also we should wait for what stage 2 brings. If it's a tower it will on the southern portion of the site on Nelson St. Fronting a street at least it would not have a blank wall there. If the north face is balconies then contrasted against the blank wall it might not be so terrible overall.Mpol03 wrote:I feel like we have lucked out... the designs of the buildings mentioned are far superior. Also having a look at the satellite map of the location... wow, bit of an overraction from us, me included. Not even a quarter of vic square even has a line of sight to this building!!! And even if it did, the wall runs north south so you won't even see half of its width from those angles, unless you're camped out in the south west corner (and half of that wall will be behind the lawcourts from that angle).

Probably fair enough. As Algernon has said, and judging by my Google Earth, the blank wall won't be too prominent when you look up at it from within the square, where it will be largely blocked out by the SA Water building. It's more prominent along the very south of the square (near the fountain) and along Gouger Street, where we'll sadly be stuck with it.A blank western wall is the only real down fall for this one. Otherwise can't wait to see this up and running.
While I'm excited at the construction of our first 100m building since 1988, probably the main concern is that I'm not entirely sure about how well this building will age with the yellowy-green colour scheme, as others have mentioned. It should tie in well with the Commonwealth Law Courts/SA Water buildings at the very least, but I get the feeling it will probably look like the odd one out in the skyline in the years to come. Maybe not a bad thing considering the main complaint of our skyline is too much beige concrete, but still.
All that said, more than happy to wait and see and hopefully be proven wrong.

^^
This is the angle from the south west corner that will have a full line of site to the building. The scale of the building is exaggerated. The lawcourts building is 57 metres tall. Using that as a measure, bugger me, Kodo would be 150m tall in this image. Also worth noting that it's not actually a blank wall. There's some windows and it's broken up vertically at least. Maybe I'm rationalising, but hey, it's a blank wall that isn't quite blank that can be seen from the square except it mostly can't, and half of it is behind another building.
Mind changed

it was very thin on all sides. Not a good look for a 100m tower. The actual design suits that height far better, and the blank wall isn't the flat concrete board I was expecting reading the earlier pages of this thread.

When you'll see it from the Hilton or any other future tall building to the west looking east it won't be that impressive. What the developers should've done is clad these blank walls with some interesting decorative panels. Perhaps with an Aboriginal pattern. How about a huge snake or goanna design?Algernon wrote:[...]

Also why not solar panels? But then won't they reflect light back to the Commonwealth Law Courts and Vic Square? My good intentions could be wrong regarding solar panels.
Cheers

There is a feature wall, I believe it is on Hutt St were there are small tiles that move in motion with the wind and change colour in a elegant, subtle manner. Something like this on Kodo at its height would be such a striking finish.

That's a wind arbour, and I agree, something like that would look great. Considering the setback nature of the western wall (it's not a continuous flat wall, there are setbacks) it's pure laziness that nothing of architectural note hasn't been incorporated.Mpol03 wrote:There is a feature wall, I believe it is on Hutt St were there are small tiles that move in motion with the wind and change colour in a elegant, subtle manner.
