Sandy Wilkinson is no authority on cityscape and design. Can you imagine if this monstrosity he designed had gone up in place of Liberty Towers in Glenelg some years back?

I'd be okay with it. The drab student accommodations are replacing previously drab buildings with the advantage of extra height and density. I like taller, wider skylines. Adelaide has a long long way to go before it's anywhere approaching Melbourne's in both height and widths.Patrick_27 wrote:My problem with a lot of the statements that you make on these forums is that you're quite content with low quality shit replacing the character of this city, so long as it has some height and subsequently increases our sky-line (because they would make us more in-line with Australia's east-coast states - why anyone would like Adelaide's sky-line to be line Melbourne's is beyond me...) Now whilst this particular chunk of the city wasn't offering much in the way of character beforehand (as mentioned, a gravel carpark next to an crash repairer) the whole basic principal of building quality over 'quantity' should also apply here as well, it's consistency. If they're intend of putting forward shit proposals, they should be forced back to the drawing board, especially for student accommodation buildings that will be built in Adelaide regardless of any opposition to design. We might be experiencing a building boom right now, but how would we all feel if the building boom crashed in the next couple of years and all we had left to show for it was a bunch of apartment/student accommodation buildings that have little to no architectural merit? I know how I'd feel.Algernon wrote:That fenced off gravel car park previously occupying the site was much more in keeping with the character of City Collision Centre next door and the snack bar across the street. We should oppose these types of developments so we can maintain the character of the city centre. A place with a City Collision Centre, a snack bar and a fenced off gravel car park.
And people wonder why the state stagnated for 2 decades with that sort of mob regulating development in the CBD
Although Bohem, Realm, Grote, U2, Kobo, Flinders and others may not be tourist worthy, they still look good and IMO improve the look of their areas. Over time I'm confident they'll become staples of the Adelaide skyline and image. Over time they'd grow into the city's culture and heritage. If Realm is built like it's renders then it'll look fantastic, especially at sunrise/set.
At skyscrapercity, crawf had put together a list of approved, submitted and UC buildings in Adelaide. The vast majority of them look great and would improve the look of our city - both from the sky and the ground - tremendously.

I don't actually mind this building but have to disagree with the sentiment. Obviously the ultimate would be to bulldoze the drab old building and replace it with something that adds a bit of value. But if it is a choice between a drab building that is hidden from view and a drab building that detracts from the skyline then it is no contest.Ser Noit of Loit wrote: The drab student accommodations are replacing previously drab buildings with the advantage of extra height and density.

And here's another shot of this beauty from today. Not its most flattering angle, sorry. It also looks better in the sunlight in my opinion.

Having now seen the building itself in person I've changed my mind about it. It's far from the ugliest in the city and actually it looks good. The uneven windows and the slope at the top are unique in a good way. At least it isn't another beige box. So I'm fine with it.

We should give it a name. Maybe the Swiss cheese building. It could go well with the cheese grater. Maybe we could even host the Swiss embassy in it.

I think it has 2 levels left until topping out. No progress since the last shot in will's post.

Just went by then. I think it's looks pretty much complete / topped out. There's no corebox visible anymore and there isn't anything significant structurally beyond the roofline at present.
I'm a bit confused because the renders do show 17 levels as does the DA application. Was a variation made that we missed?

This one is built different to most, there is no core box its all pre fab.

There never was a corebox visible. It's assembled one level at a time.

I just can't see this building aging well. It's so damn ugly!
