I thought the original announcement was that the extension would be finished by the end of the year?

Well, yeah, but the question was: "When will work start?"

Realistically, that could be from now to mid October, assuming it to be complete by Christmas shopping rush.

I would have thought it would take longer than two months to complete wouldn't it? All the tracks, all stops, power, both North Terrace and KWS branch?

Melbourne is doing a new section of similar length, including stops and crossing works over the period of two months with zero dramas.

That's down Toorak Road, and the main drag past the War Memorial.

DPTI have just replied to a message I sent them - works will start in August. :D

speaking of Christmas, how is digging up North Terrace going to affect the Christmas pageant in November? I cant even remember if the KWS works had any impact way back when.

If the work starts in August, it will only affect the Xmas Pageant if there's some unforseen delay...or for some reason the government wants to stretch the construction time out. I wouldn't have thought that likely, but stranger things have happened.

The work in King Wm. St. Sth. also is on the Pageant route.

Wasn't the pageant run along Pulteney Street last year?

Remember the pageant only goes along North Tce from KWS to David Jones - so just over a third of the length of the new line. Provided they get that section complete first, then I can't see there being too much interference.

Shuz, the pageant generally runs up KWS South, right on to Wakefield St, up Pulteney St, back to KWS along Grenfell St, and then up to North Tce.

Thanks for asking the question. Good to know. That means before the State Election in 2018..the following will have opened for use:
O-bahn tunnel
North Tce Tram extension
any others I'm forgetting early on before the coffee takes effect?;)
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.

FFS! What has any of this got to do with trams?

The Government wouldn't even use Arrium rails for the Jetty Road tram track replacement!

Did they give a reason for that decision? Wrong type of steel?
