Delicate demolition job on this one.
Thought I would walk around the corner to take a shot from this afternoon:

What sort of percentage are we talking about when discussing the number of Asbestos buildings in the city?
[COM] Re: #Under Construction: Conservatory on Hindmarsh - 68m 18lvl
Probably most buildings built before 1980?
You hear it here first...

Hope the ne tower has protective cover cantilevers - many buildings in inner cities have dispensed with the idea - much to the chagin of many pedestrians - especially in poor weather conditions. Less inviting all round.

will be able to get a few good shots of the old KPMG building once this one's demolished.

Guys I went past today and had no idea that the building thats coming down looks like a nice old building that was hidden by another repulsive 1960s/70s modernising facade. I wonder how many other buildings in Adelaide are covered over in this way. I know parts of the Beehive corner buildings were uncovered to their former glory 5-10 years back. And when you walk down Hindley St there are many clear examples of old stone buildings covered over in horrid metal shit. Could be another program to be set up by the council to assist owners in pulling down the 1960s facades to return buildings to their rightful look. Honestly, planners and architects of the 1960s, most should be sent to jail, and whoever was responsible for building the Hungry Jacks carpark and demolishing what was there, should be hung!

That was the Grand Central Hotel - what a top name. Quite imposing too. Carried an aura of significance. It next was inhabited by ETSA and then came tumbling down. I saw it only once. About the same height as the current monstrosity - happily to be at least partly covered by the 'Adelaide Convergence' .

what era is that old KPMG behind the demolition? 80's? don't quite know what to think of it.. the red brick, and those curves.. pretty dated!
[COM] Re: #Under Construction: Conservatory on Hindmarsh - 68m 18lvl
The building was built between 1988-1990. And it isn't red brick, it is more like a red plastic style facade.omada wrote:what era is that old KPMG behind the demolition? 80's? don't quite know what to think of it.. the red brick, and those curves.. pretty dated!

Co-incidentally, I saw an old photo of this hotel last night. What a fantastic building! Such a shame it came down - was it still structurally sound? What were they thinking?skyliner wrote:That was the Grand Central Hotel - what a top name. Quite imposing too. Carried an aura of significance.

I think the red building looks cool .. adds character to the city skyline and looks good .. will be an ugly day when the whole skyline is filled with glass boxes.
The SA Water building next to it looks good as well .. tapered look is nice. eg. CC1 is damn boring and bland!
