How Port Adelaide’s Port Admiral Hotel is getting its character back — the rebirth of a 168-year-old pub


THE historic Port Admiral Hotel is about to start a fresh chapter in its life — after a two-year, million-dollar restoration.
Owner-renovators Alison Sloley and Adam Freeman have just handed the keys to the 1849 heritage pub to new tenants.
It’s the oldest remaining building in Port Adelaide and eighth oldest in the state.
Moving in are Angus Henderson with partners Angus Kiley and Jim Morrison, from nearby Low and Slow American BBQ, along with Crispian Fielke, Josh Baker and Dana Whyte from city bar Clever Little Tailor.
Renowned chef Stewart Wesson from Unley’s Whistle and Flute cafe will round out the new team known as Port Local.

Seems to be the Railway Hotel in the picture - is it this pub, or is it a generic picture?

The Port Admiral started its life briefly as the Railway Hotel, when the original Adelaide to Port Adelaide railway was planned to terminate there. When the railway was eventually built the Port Dock station was located further down St Vincent St. The hotel changed its name to the Port Admiral and the current Railway Hotel opened directly opposite the station.

Port Adelaide master plan revealed: New townhouses, shops, cafes, cinema on the waterfront



ABOUT 1300 homes including four-storey townhouses, shops, cafes and an outdoor cinema are set to be built along the waterfront in the historic heart of Port Adelaide.

A public promenade around the inner harbour waterfront, converting the old Marine and Harbors building into apartments and shops and the creation of an observation deck are among the other plans for the site being released today.

The State Government has selected two Australian developers and a South Australian construction company as preferred proponents for five parcels of land on the inner harbour.

The developments are planned to take up 23ha of the 40ha of land the Government put on the market in May last year.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Stephen Mullighan said Port Adelaide was a unique development opportunity combining vast parcels of waterfront land with 180 years of distinctive maritime history and heritage buildings.

“These projects provide plenty of open space and recreational facilities, as well as preserving public access to the waterfront as well. It will be a great place for families looking to live in the west,” he said.

Good news story for the Port and an emerging, award-winning local SA business.

New craft beer brewery planned for Port Adelaide

Booming South Australian craft beer business Pirate Life Brewing plans to open a new brewery in Port Adelaide in 2018.
Pirate Life is fast outgrowing its inner-city Adelaide base in Hindmarsh where it was started in 2014 by West Australian father and son team Michael and Jack Cameron and Jack’s best mate Jared “Red” Proudfoot.

.... the new brewery would likely include a 200-250-seat hospitality venue – an aspect of the business lacking at its jam-packed Hindmarsh brewery.

He said a site in Port Adelaide had been chosen but could not yet be revealed ...

“There’s a lot of good things happening down at Port Adelaide; there’s a lot of new restaurants and a few pubs being redeveloped, so if we can get the brewery down there and have a front-of-house offering then we can add to the development of Port Adelaide.”

Pirate Life’s hoppy West Coast-style beers in a can have proven a hit, with production reaching 2.3 million litres in 2016/17. ...

“Two and a half years ago we started ... and we’ve now got 41 staff on the books and we are planning on building the new brewery in Port Adelaide"

"Moving to Adelaide has proven to be an absolute rock-star decision not only from a distribution point of view but it is a city that thrives on quality – its wine and food industries, its location and its beauty.”

“We’re still growing – we’ve got new tanks coming in the week after next, which will give us a 40 per cent capacity on that and it will allow us to open up some more markets within Australia and focus a bit more on export.

Port precinct revivals in other states

Craft beer has played a role in the revival of several major port precincts around Australia in recent years, including Fremantle, Darling Harbour and Geelong.

Cameron said Pirate Life recognised the potential of Port Adelaide.
“It’s going to get to the point where people are going to want to get down there to enjoy Port Adelaide,” he said

"It’s not just about craft beer – it’s about food and wine and all the quality things South Australia has to offer like art, music and architecture. Beer just becomes a part of that overall picture that makes Port Adelaide a great place to visit.

“The Government here are doing a lot of work to try and develop Port Adelaide and I think if we get the brewery up and running with a tourism facility then it will add to that.”

Adelaide Brighton Cement pushing back against further residential development anywhere near their factory.

Adelaide Brighton Cement may relocate overseas if residential development continues in Port Adelaide, taking 400 jobs


PUSH us out of the Port and we’ll go overseas – that’s the message Adelaide Brighton Cement has handed the State Government.

The cement works’ operations manager, Felicity Lloyd, delivered the blunt warning at a state Environment, Resources and Development Committee meeting last week.

She was asked by the committee’s presiding member, Labor MP Tom Kenyon, if the plant could be relocated to make way for nearby housing developments and how much such a move would cost.

“From a cost perspective it is highly unlikely in my view that it would be replaced (in South Australia),” Ms Lloyd told the committee.

Greens MP Mark Parnell then suggested the company, which employs 400 people in SA, would choose to relocate in China and Ms Lloyd nodded in agreement.

Another development proposal for Port Adelaide, this time next to the Quest Hotel. There seem to be a lot of proposals at the port that don't come to fruition, I am hoping that one day we actually see a "construction boom".

A $40 million, seven-storey, independent living development is proposed for Queen’s Wharf, Port Adelaide.



AN outdoor putting green and communal garden are features of a lifestyle deck incorporated into a $40 million, seven-storey, independent living development proposed for Queen’s Wharf, Port Adelaide.
Port Adelaide businessman and developer Hans Ehmann has lodged a development application with the State Commission Assessment Panel for this second in a series of projects planned for the Queens Wharf, known as Dock 27.
It will comprise 72 apartments, retail space, generous communal open spaces and stand alongside another Ehmann project, the $25 million Quest Hotel development.
Dock 27 has been positioned to respond to Minister John Rau’s declaration for significant retirement living developments (of more than $20 million) to be assessed as a Major Project in accordance with the Development Act.
To achieve this, the project team will be working diligently with the State Government and Port Adelaide Enfield City Council to ensure it is optimised for the community from a social, environmental and economic perspective.
“My plans for the Queen’s Wharf are to introduce a stable population of about 750 people to the area, extend the hours of the Port and fast-track economic growth in the area,” Mr Ehmann says.
Mr Ehmann owns Queens Wharf as well as heritage-listed Customs House in Port Ad elaide, which he plans to restore.
Dock 27 accommodation will consist of 58 two-bed apartments, eight three-bedroom apartments and six luxury penthouse suites.
All offer comfortable living space and a balcony or terrace from which residents can take in the views of the Port River, Semaphore or the Hills. Apartments will have two bathrooms and at least one carpark.

I was in the Port yesterday and WOW. I know the boom hasn't hit just yet BUT dam it's been cleaned up, the feel of the place is more alive and the pubs and cafes are really starting to move in. Where four years ago it was very drab, this even small transformation has done the place a world of good.

More development like the one above, please.
I hope they can keep the old and integrate it with the new. It would become such a vibrant suburb if this were to happen.
