I walk up and down Russell Street (Between Gilbert and Wright Streets) most days and this is going to have such a big impact from that area. Just by looking at the crane, it gives you an idea. Looking forward to watching it rise

THE developers of a 20-storey building in Adelaide’s CBD have redesigned its exterior to exclude cladding panels, following safety concerns after London’s fatal Grenfell tower fire.

U City on Franklin St is a mixed-use building by Uniting Communities and will include specialist disability accommodation and retirement residences. The building, which has been designed to achieve a six-star green star rating, is in the early stages of construction.

However, its developers have redesigned its external facade to exclude any use of any composite panels due to ongoing safety debate.

Communities chief executive Simon Schrapel said “safety and confidence” in the building must come first.

They may well be fully approved for use in Australia, but with the memory of London’s Grenfell Tower disaster still fresh we have gone back to the drawing board with our builders to ensure no such material, however small, will be used in U City,” he said.

“We have now opted instead to use locally fabricated aluminium sheeting which is completely non-combustible and has absolutely no polyethylene content at all.

“This change in material may come at extra cost to us as the developers, however cost is clearly not our primary focus when it comes to safety and protecting lives.”
