Isn't there an even older RAA building next to it? Any idea how old that one is Will?
The building you refer to was actually built as the YWCA building. It didn't become the RAA building until many decades later. That building which is heritage listed, was built around 1899-1900.

I'm pretty sure the 'building' that just came down was actually two separate buildings once upon a time. It was my understanding that the original RAA building was on the corner of Hyde St and at some point it was joined with the larger building to the east of it.

I Think the original RAA sign can be seen on one of the 'internal' walls in one of jk's photos.

I suspect you may be right there, Wiz. The windows on the two buildings, while at the same level, have a slightly different shape.
cheers,

The RAA building is no more.. Walked past at 2pm and its gone. On one side you can just see a pile of rubble.
Looks like they just pulled it down. Lots of action. Still had a hose running from the fire hydrant to keep the dust down.

Greener demolitions
Article from: The Advertiser
RHIANNON HOYLE, REAL ESTATE EDITOR

August 27, 2007 02:15am

THE success rate for recycling building materials from demolition sites has reached new heights in Adelaide.

Developer Hines Property expects to achieve a "recyclable success rate" of about 98 per cent, gauged by the weight of the waste, removed from the former RAA building on the corner of Grenfell St and Hindmarsh Square, city.

The demolition, almost completed, will make way for the $70 million green residential and office development, the Conservatory. The recycled waste will remain in the construction industry in quarry material and scrap metal with timber combustibles used as alternative fuel at Adelaide Brighton Cement.

Already completed green certified buildings, including The Advertiser's Keith Murdoch House and the new Santos House in Flinders Link, have led the charge by being some of the first projects in SA to recycle record levels of demolition and construction waste.

Hines Property director James Hines said the Conservatory was the third significant development by the company that had achieved a success rate of more than 85 per cent for its demolition sites. "To be able to recycle virtually all of the rubble and building materials from a large demolition site such as this is a significant environmental outcome," he said.

South Australian company PT Building Services is undertaking the demolition works.

Construction of the Conservatory is expected to be complete by early 2009.

The new SA Water headquarters, at 1 Victoria Square, also aims high on waste recycling.

While there was an aim to recycle more than 80 per cent of demolition materials, developers hope to match that level for construction waste as well.

Previously only about 500,000 tonnes of an estimated four million tonnes of quarry material used on construction sites was recycled. The rest was dumped at landfill sites.

There is a nice big hole in the ground. Looks like there used to be a basement one floor deep. All that is left so far is a small pile of rubble in the middle of the hole.
Anyone know of any places where you can see top down into the fenced off area for photos?

This site has been dead for weeks now. I hope to see some construction on site soon. Seems really dead in that area with Aurora Buildings empty, Acadamy Cinemas closed and half of Hindmarsh Square fenced off it's a bit like a ghost town.

Construction will start in two weeks. Bovis Lend Lease will be the construction team here. It's great too see some big interstate constructions companies coming to Adelaide (Bovis, Multiplex and I heard the possibility of Grocon tendering for the Currie St tower.)
Walking on over....

The eastern flank of Hindmarsh Square (the block bounded between Pirie and Grenfell Streets) needs a serious redevelopment. The building that currently stands is a hideous atrocity.

Have noticed a lot of newspaper ads on both this and Aurora projects. There certianly is a lot of positivity coming from the two developers to get tenants into either buildings.
