I think the ACC should raise limits by 30metres in the core and surrounding areas. Logically if the Westpac (ex-Santos) building is 135metres all others should be limited by that height. Adelaide definitely needs a few more towers around the 100-130metre mark. They would give Adelaide the look of a real thriving commercial city.

Whilst I agree, can anyone imagine the ACC making such a drastic change? (oh for the sake of nimbys!) It would be political suicide for them to do so and have thier precious senior voters in uproar about the draconian effect it will have on their lifestyle... blah blah blah.
State Goverment needs intervention into this issue. Just declare a uniform 213.5m height limit across the city and put an end to this awkward, embarassing political charade that is the ACC.

Now that the Santos building has been built, let all others be permitted to reach that high - after all no planes have come near it that I know. The central CBD area must be all of a quarter of the 'square mile' - and of the 100's of arial kilometres (squared) above the city, surely there is enough for planes to get around that part of the CBD.
Am I being ignorant here of flight trajectory capacities and abilities to turn planes around such a small area?

It sounds to me that is the only thing they can hold onto as to the reason why we shouldn't build up.
I have occasionally seen planes over the CBD, they are not even close to the buildings. We could build the Q1 tower and it still wouldn't be close.
As far as I am concerned, especially after Sep 11, all CBD areas should be no fly zones. They managed to do that over many parts of the world for security, so why not here.

When planes take off towards the east, they have the same trajectory as when they land. Therefore if they continued on a straight path they would fly over North Adelaide. But all the east coast planes start turning east as soon as they takeoff and hence they fly over the cbd. Personally I think that this is laziness on the airline behalf. I can't see it that hard for planes to continue straight until they have passed the cbd then turn to the east... But what do I know???

700ft is just a good medium in skyscraper heights, not too tall, not too small. lets first see a few building in and around the 130-150M range pop up first before we start to think about 200M+
Given the weird repressed and disturbed mentality of the ACC, making the leap from 130 to 150M might be easier to convince them rather than trying to go from 130 to 200+M.

Thanks for your answer. 700ft sounds fair enough. In my opinion buildings around the 40 to 50 storeys are high enough. They can be seen from a fair distance. Stelaras is right in saying these things should be taken a step-at-a-time. Maybe a 30m increment today and a further 30-40m at a later stage depeding on our building boom. Just a suggestion.

I'm not sure flightpaths are the main reason why buildings are limited to a certain height in Adelaide. I think it could be because of radar reasons. I haven't contacted AAL to find out, but if anyone is interested I think you should ask them. If that is the case buildings higher than Westpac could be built more to the east and south east since planes coming from Sydney and Melbourne usually fly well south of the city when making approaches from the Gulf. Unfortunately the ACC wants the tallest buildings in a small area of the CBD, the core. Should height limits be uniform across the CBD, or spatially adjusted - like the system we have now?

I think they should still keep the spatially adjusted system, but extend the boundaries of the CBD core to maybe two or three times the current. Adjacent commercial and mixed use areas should also be enlarged. There should be a 119m limit (or higher) right across the CBD core. Not just in the central part

I think a uniform limit across the entire square mile, with restrictions around squares and heritage areas to allow light in and such like the new Brisbane plan is best... that way it allows for an "organic" skyline to develop. For some reason I think that would be more pleasing to the eye and make the city look like a more happening place than a "sculpted" skyline.
BTW: Not only are they lifting restrictions in the Brisbane CBD, they're also doubling the limits in Fortitude Valley. Brisbane's CBD may be small, but all of the surrounding areas (Fortitude Valley, Spring Hill, Southbank, Kangaroo Point, etc.) are more built-up than the Adelaide square mile!
