Sorry for the quality, sun is in a strange position, will try and get a photo in the morning - it is a pretty big / deep hole.

Is a fairly big hole. Strange that they've taken the tops off the piling, is that standard?

I assume the excavation is for the lift overrun pits, combined with the pilecap for the core. These can be quite big/deep, especially where high speed lifts are in use. I understood there was no basement for this building, but there may be stair access adjacent to the lift pits for maintenance.

I was of the understanding that there was a basement for bike storage, control room and the like.

So can anyone explain why they sunk the concrete pylons first and now are digging them out along with the basement?

Because the piling machinery can't operate in a basement?

Realm Adelaide apartment construction reaches new heights with arrival of tallest crane of its type in Australia
Renato Castello, Urban Development Editor, Sunday Mail (SA)
March 24, 2018 4:25pm

APARTMENT construction in Adelaide is reaching unprecedented heights and it takes a special piece of equipment — and courage — to get there.

Builders of the $100 million Realm Adelaide, which will become Adelaide’s second tallest building when complete, have installed a 69m-tall crane on the Austin St site, behind Pulteney Street’s Mansions Apartments.

Realm Adelaide claim the structure, erected over two days, is the tallest freestanding multi-storey crane in Australia, capable of lifting up to 11 tonnes and is expected to being operating after Easter.

The crane will be progressively attached to the building during construction topping out at 132m matching the final height of the 40-storey apartment tower.

Builder Maxcon granted photographer Matt Loxton access to climb the crane for a unique view of the city skyline.

Once completed Realm Adelaide will equal the height of Westpac House, currently Adelaide’s tallest building, but will be three metres shorter than the Adelaidean apartment building, also under construction on Frome Street, which will become SA’s new tallest building.

Realm Adelaide is scheduled for completion in late 2019 or early 2020 and Adelaidean for first quarter 2020.

The Realm crane is the 16th operating in Adelaide with the number expected to increase to more than 20 by the middle of the year.

Realm Adelaide sales manager Ben Small said contracts had been signed on 87 per cent of the 320 apartments, including a 450 sqm two-storey penthouse valued at $5.5 million.

“We’ve had a really good 2018 so far, a lot of people downsizing and there’s a lot of interest coming from Sydney as well; people are relocating from Sydney to Adelaide for a change of lifestyle,” he said.

“We are seeing a lot of people selling a four or five-bedroom home and take up apartment living.”

About 4 levels deep now. Does anyone not what they are doing as there is no basement. Also they are smashing up and removing the piling. Seems very odd to me. No way will they be at level 6 by end of June.

They wouldn’t have made an error, would they?

Ah, no, there wouldn't be an error. Whilst piles are laid to form a foundation, they can then be capped and form a lower raft slab for a lift overrun. Also, looking at the renders of the tower, it doesn't appear that there is a traditional lift motor room, it could suggest that the lift equipment is all housed below ground level. It's a smart idea, as it maximises the roof top realestate.
Walking on over....
