I agree, this entire extension has been an fucking disaster ascetically. Aside from the better station design, there is no comparison with how well the Vic Square to City West extension happened.

Were those sections done by different contractors? The same company with different guidance? The same company getting lazy? The king william/ north terrace intersection looks like it's 10+ years old. The bitumen is uneven and cracked, and there are measurement lines and numbers clearly on it. After 6 months since their arrival in Adelaide Citadis trams 207/209 are still yet to be seen in service, yet 208 has been in service for over 4 weeks and is out and about every day!

On Channel 9 news tonight a report that the project is running a long way behind schedule(as if we didn't already know) and over budget.
It is now expected to be finished by the end of the month, which means with driver training and tram testing ,it will be some time in June before services begin.
Apparently there have been electrical and signalling problems as well, adding to the delay.

Re: parts of North Tce streetscape affected by tram works, I messaged Adelaide City Council about the state of the pavements and trees on the southern side.
The temporary bitumen will be replaced with slate again soon and they are working with the State Government to reinstate mature trees along those sections also.

It seems, hopefully, that the Libs aren't quite as anti-tram as I had suspected. It's a shame about the lack of metropolitan extensions but a North Adelaide line would be great for the area.

The North Tce tram extension was originally earmarked for completion by the start of last month but is still ongoing despite the previous Labor State Government coughing up an extra $10 million to speed up the tram project.
On FIVEaa radio today, Mr Knoll said it would be completed soon.
“It’s still on track to be finished at the end of the month, which was the same time as the adjusted timeline,” he said.
Mr Knoll did not have the final cost for just how much the project would end up costing — it was originally $50 million before $20 million was added to its cost for a new stop outside the Festival Plaza — and instead had a dig at his political opponents.
“We had a situation where the former government spent an extra $10 million to reach a political deadline,” he said. “We have been working with this adjusted timeline.”
The delay in the project has frustrated East End traders, who say it is compounding their woes following the Royal Adelaide Hospital relocation.
Mr Knoll said there were “exciting things” planned for the old RAH site by the end of the year.
Work is continuing on organising a right-hand turn into North Tce from King William St while extending the line to at least Adelaide Oval was a “no-brainer”.
“Work is underway with the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (on the right hand turn),” he said.
“I’ve had talks with the department on it. We’ve kept our mind open on extending it to North Adelaide ... but to get to Adelaide Oval seems like a no-brainer.”
Mr Knoll said an independent transport authority, outside of DPTI, would look at transport in South Australia as a whole.

DPTI have just issued an update:
The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) would like to provide an update on the finishing works along North Terrace, between King William Road and East Terrace, and along
King William Road, as part of the City Tram Extension. Major infrastructure works are complete, with finishing works, including the safety critical commissioning of rail signalling and electrical testing remaining. Other finishing works include, works to the platforms on North Terrace and King William Road, final line marking, asphalt and kerbing works.
Test trams are currently scheduled for mid May, followed by two weeks of driver training, with Trams services anticipated to commence late May.
Speed and lane restrictions will be in place in the vicinity of the finishing works, however the road will remain open to traffic in both directions at all times. Speed restriction will be in place while workers are on site. Access to businesses and properties will be maintained throughout the works. Every effort will be made to minimise noise impacts to nearby residents and businesses. However, some noise will be unavoidable during this period.
DPTI appreciates your patience and cooperation whilst these important works are undertaken.

Adelaide people are so wedded to their cars yet they all become instant PT experts as soon as there's a chance some transport money might be spent on PT and they really enjoy having a good dig at a Public Transport project. It reinforces in their mind that money spent on things other than roads is a waste.
Big infrastructure investments are usually under-valued and & over-criticized while in the planning stage. It's much easier to envision the here and now costs and inconveniences, and far more difficult to imagine fully the eventual benefits.

If they extend the line until Oval it will be a pure political stunt... that extension by itself has not point as it can be used properly only for a few hours whenever something going on at the Oval. Also, there is no enough trams to pull out the crowd in a very short time. It will be interesting to see the business case.
If they build the right turn, we will need a very different traffic lights management otherwise we will have trams waiting for five minutes or more for their turn… giving total priority to trams will slow down the cars… and we know what that means.

I'm no fan of the Liberal approach to rail, but I think you're being a bit harsh. Labour built the line as far as the festival centre, so why then is extending it to AO in their first term deemed a political stunt? Also it has been clearly stated that the Libs do envisage it reaching North Adelaide at least, so it adds to the weight of that.
