Should Adelaide bid for a theme park...'a la' Disneyland etc.

#1 Post by Ho Really » Wed May 09, 2018 11:33 pm

Was reading a short article this arvo in the US version of Travel Weekly. It seems the CEO of Disney Parks and Resorts, Bob Iger, is thinking about possible expansion.

This is what he said. "We think that there's opportunity to expand in China, and there may also be opportunities in other parts of the world. We are constantly engaging in conversations with people from different markets who would love to put Disneyland in their market. We're going to take a look at some of them. I'd say there's an inevitability to us building parks in other countries, but it doesn't necessarily mean that we're going to build something anytime very soon."

Whether it is soon or not, these parks take a long time to design and build. It would be a long term project. Should Adelaide show interest and make a submission?

Cheers

Wouldn't work here. Every other Disneyland in the world is located in or near a large populated city (to draw locals), plus those cities also have a large tourism base.

Think LA, Orlando, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

If we wanted to get more tourists here using a well-known brand, I think we'd be better off having the Art Gallery partner with the Guggenheim Museum to establish a Guggenheim Adelaide (only one in the Southern Hemisphere), located in a stunning and striking building.

What we need is something like Green Hills adventure park but closer to the city, however who wants to invest when car parks and pokies have a better return and insurance is on different scale.

The number of annual visitors even to Dreamworld is higher than SA's entire population. We simply don't have the population or tourist base here for a major theme park.

What came first, the tourist base or the theme parks? and I think you'll find that number includes locals going multiple times a year

Adelaide needs to hold a World Fair. The next one is in 2020 in Dubai, then 2023 in Buenos Aires. Then there's three cities proposed for 2025.

Time it with a successful Commonwealth Games bid for 2030.

Build up our infrastructure, road, public transport, airport, cruise ship terminal.
Modernize the look and image of our City/CBD.
Diversify of economy.

Basically everything being done now, but on turbo, and bigger and better. Culminating in two major international events, World Expo and Commonwealth Games, will really put Adelaide on the world map.

We need to have confidence in ourselves if we're ever going to have a theme park.

We already have a theme park. It's called the ShitAdelaide Instagram page.

Now that's the right attitude. As long as we have something worth visiting, the right infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, public transport, cultural establishments etc.,) and events we can out do anyone. It's confidence and hard work that get things done.

The world fair is a great idea and it can work for any city. Even the build up to the event generates interest. The construction of the pavilions, the avantgarde architecture and technology that will be displayed. All talking points.

No disrespect rev, but the Commonwealth Games is a different kettle of fish. It will come and go quickly. It doesn't cover enough countries to give Adelaide enough publicity. Interest is also waning. I've said it before, target sports and other events towards the largest markets. Even smaller events that are cheaper to organise but aimed at a world audience is far better.

Disneyland attracts worldwide attention. All we need now is Disney to come up with Aussie characters in some of their productions. Now that would be a scoop.

just for reference, the Eiffel Tower was built as a temporary entrance for the 1889 Worlds Fair and was only suppose to stand for 20 years

I'm willing to bet a substantial amount of money that Queensland already had lots of tourists before Dreamworld opened.

I am all in favour of bold developments for Adelaide, but a large scale theme park isn't bold, it would be a foolish investment.

A theme park on its own yes, but as part of a wider strategy and plan no.
A theme park doesn’t necessarily mean roller coasters.

Going after Disney and trying to pull them to setup here, would be a bold move for Adelaide.

don't see the need for a theme park, the Showgrounds could open more frequently for side shows but we need innovative centres. Our museum is a Natural Museum which you can only visit so many times, we need a museum such Sydney Powerhouse, Melbourne / Victoria Museum, Spotswood Science Museum. We have just missed out on a Guggenheim Arts Centre to Melbourne, there are a few innovative ideas we can duplicate from France
