Opening up the western end of Adelaide Railway Station

#1 Post by potsandpans » Mon Aug 20, 2018 10:11 am

With the development of the Biomedical Precint on North Tce, I think it would be great to open up the western end of Adelaide Railway Station as an Entrance/Exit for the station. I'm thinking stairs and escalators leading to a newly constructed pedestrian bridge that runs parallel to the Montefiore Rd bridge over the railway tracks. Does anyone know of any plans for something like this?

There are no public plans for anything like this at the moment. The biggest chance we have of getting better access to the station will be when the underground loop is completed.

The 'plaza' area/drop off area in front of the Intercontinental is run down. The Riverside Center could be demolished and a public plaza built that has eateries/cafes with access to the station underneath...?

Martin Haese proposal

Lord Mayor Martin Haese endorses Adelaide railyards site for proposed new multipurpose arena

ORD Mayor Martin Haese is endorsing the city railyards as a site for a proposed multi-use arena, which would house concerts, entertainment and major sports.

A site south of the River Torrens, west of the Morphett St bridge and north of the railyards is being examined as part of a business case being prepared for the ambitious arena.

It is understood this would involve building over an existing carpark and extending over the railyards — similar to an arena planned for Brisbane’s centre — with tunnels underneath for trains.

The Advertiser last month revealed another site in the Riverbank precinct, north of the Torrens and west of Montefiorie Rd, was being examined for the proposed concert, event, soccer, tennis and basketball arena.

Mr Haese, the outgoing Lord Mayor, told The Advertiser: “My personal opinion is that building over the railyards has merit and could prove to be an efficient use of space. It also substantially reduces the impact on the Parklands.”

The business case has been commissioned by the Adelaide Venue Management Corporation, which operates the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Hindmarsh Stadium and Adelaide Convention Centre.

The latter is on the opposite side of the Morphett St bridge to the proposed railyards site. Arena costs and concept designs are being prepared.

One option involves selling off the Entertainment Centre for commercial use, potentially a new shopping centre, and using Hindmarsh Stadium for housing.

Isn't the new uni buildings blocking that?
Perhaps it is behind them and that picture just omits showing them.

Yes you're right. That render uses the space before the Uni of South Australia building was constructed, so they should really re-do the render....the proposed Adelaide Arena would not fully visible from North Terrace, it would actually be a building that "fronts" Morhett St bridge.

With buildings fronted on both sides you wouldn't know you're on a bridge. It would be like a small scale version of what Atlanta did, raising the street level to match the level of bridges over a railyard.

Or closer to home, what they've done with Southern Cross Station and The Age buildings on the Batman's Hill / Collins Street bridge over the railyards in Docklands Melbourne.

Yes exactly like this Shuz! Southern Cross Station has both ends opened up, I think the same could be done in Adelaide.
