They should be banned from any future streets. Bland trees which look shithouse in winter. They are absolutely disastrous for our fragile waterways because they dump an extraordinary nutrient load in autumn which suffocates all native aquatic species.

I was so disappointed when people ashamed of our great country insisted on these appalling trees being used on the Nth tce upgrade instead of the proposed eucalypts.

That is prepostorous! Plane trees are undoubtly one of the most beautiful trees around and their cycles of lush green/blandness is simply contrasting, it adds great character to an area, and I'm glad we got rid of horrible eucalypts (which look dead all the time anyways, and the leaves look rather dry) and replaced them with Plane Trees.

If anything, Adelaide should have more. Much more, and I really like the Japanese cherry blossom trees too. They are looking beautiful right now.

Back to the tramline now - thanks for the photos, I am taking a ride to town on Saturday so I will take a look. For my Geography field study i am conducting a survey on the tramline and will be seeking responses from the public.

New footpath being laid along the side of the extension in Victoria Square. However, this is almost being done on the cheap with ashphalt. Better then nothing I suppose.

Hopefully its just because of the proposed re developement of the square... but who knows how long that will be.

does any1 know what theyre going to do with the old tram area?... just new grass i suppose

Agreed, great shots Will. The shelter looks good - simple, modern and classy. By the way, I love the look of trees when they loose their leaves as much as summer when they do have leaves. Plane trees are OK, Look at Hutt St - it looks nice. Also Frome St at the uni's, Victoria Ave in Unley Park, Osmond Tce, Norwood, Jeffcott St in Nth Ad. Plane trees look great in those areas actually.

Being one of the people against the use of eucalyptus trees on North Terrace, my opossition stems from the fact that the stately, elegant, European buildings along North Terrace would not make a good match with the 'bogan' eucalyptus trees. I dislike the form of eucalyptus trees. They are not elegant trees, and I hate how they have been used in the median strip along the Parade in Norwood and in the Anzac Highway median strip at Glenelg.

I too love the plane trees, for reasons that others have mentioned here. Having said that, I also think the Parade looks great with the flowering ironbarks down the middle. There are so many types of eucalypts, and not all are good as street trees. Many drop branches too easily, and so are a danger. Some have expansive root systems which cause problems with other infrastructure. Basically, these days, councils have come up with a range of trees which are acceptable as street trees from the points of view just mentioned, so as beautiful as an old regum or lemon scented gum may look, you're just not gonna see the councils planting them along the streets any more.

As for the quite correct issue about the nutrients in the waterways, a couple of years ago there was talk about the owners of deciduous trees being responsible for the leaves in autumn, and being fined for allowing them to get into the waterways. This was going to apply to councils as well. I don't know how far it got. Eucalyptus leaves take much longer to break down and don't cause the same problems.

The eucalyptus trees selected were a considerably more attractive species than the ones used at Norwood and Glenelg. They also would have allowed much better views of those beautiful buildings. When the eucalypts were proposed I checked them up on the internet. They are very elegant trees which would have tied in much better with the other landscaping and the buildings. Too many of Adelaide's interesting projects are dumbed down by populist decisions such as this one. Single items should never be changed at the last minute. If the designers had been told they had to use plane trees at the beginning the whole design of North Tce probably would have been different. As it is the Plane trees sit incongruously with the other plant species and block some of the best views of the buildings. This is only going to get worse as they get older.

I was probably a little harsh on the trees earlier but Plane trees are best used as they are on Victoria Ave where they completely enclose the street or as on the boulevards of Paris where they are planted close together and trimmed so that their canopies effectively create a rectangular hedge 3m in the air. This is not what they were being used for in Nth Tce. As stand alone trees they are pretty bland.

Calling Eucalyptus trees bogan is just cultural cringe. The River Red Gum for example, whilst not a good street tree, is one of the most beautiful and inspiring trees on this planet.

And I'm sick of people comparing Adelaide icons to international landmarks. Grenfell St is not Fifth Ave, The Festival Theatre is not the Sydney Opera House, Victoria Square is not Federation Sqaure, I could go on and on.

Back to trams now. I like how our trams are purely South Australian (the colours of them) which I haven't seen replicated elsewhere. Uniqueness.

Sorry, guys, I confess - irelevant info to the topic - it was me that set you off about the trees in my last post on this thread.( just a passing comment on Plane Trees. Adelaide looks so good in the pics of Nth Tce. with them).

The tramline and Vic.Sq. stop looking very impressive - hope the line extends down Googer St. and does the loop to Nth. Tce. Also up to Brougham Pl. Will contribute significantly to the urban feel of the city as well as to movement.

Just found out on Railmedia that at 8pm, Hs 367 and 351 (the pair used on Sunday night) were again given a run to North Terrace. This time, they were able to make it passed the intersection and past the railway station and on toward City West.
