Yeah, and just, you know, wash out the Festival Theatre as well. The height on this is fine as is.nath199 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 02, 2019 10:09 amLove the curves, the finished product will look great and bring a whole new hub of activity and interest but can't help but feel it's a lost opportunity in terms of an iconic tower in this space, imagine that building but all the way up to the 120m - 140m mark, to then be complimented by the Walker tower (if and whenever that goes ahead).
Would take focus away from the dated Intercontinental which fronts our postcards, news weather bulletins and even this sites banner image haha

I agree, when you consider that James Packer is spending a lazy $2 billion on Crown Sydney, the $300 million which Skycity are spending here can be defined as 'pocket money'.nath199 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 02, 2019 10:09 amLove the curves, the finished product will look great and bring a whole new hub of activity and interest but can't help but feel it's a lost opportunity in terms of an iconic tower in this space, imagine that building but all the way up to the 120m - 140m mark, to then be complimented by the Walker tower (if and whenever that goes ahead).

$330 million is still a serious amount of cash. And correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure it's the single largest private investment in Adelaide's history.ghs wrote: ↑Wed Jan 02, 2019 6:31 pmI agree, when you consider that James Packer is spending a lazy $2 billion on Crown Sydney, the $300 million which Skycity are spending here can be defined as 'pocket money'.nath199 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 02, 2019 10:09 amLove the curves, the finished product will look great and bring a whole new hub of activity and interest but can't help but feel it's a lost opportunity in terms of an iconic tower in this space, imagine that building but all the way up to the 120m - 140m mark, to then be complimented by the Walker tower (if and whenever that goes ahead).

That'd be the Myer Centre, wouldn't it?Jaymz wrote: ↑Wed Jan 02, 2019 7:06 pm$330 million is still a serious amount of cash. Holdfast Shores would be high on the list aswell.

Regardless of the amount, we would have to be happy that something is finally moving here. The current casino is actually an embarrassment more befitting a regional town pokies parlour than a capital city. Are the any details regarding the existing layout with this? Hopefully some decent refurb goes in to the gaming floors and bars. Given the captive market that literally pours out of the Adelaide Oval in football season, it surely can afford to up its game.

The real missed opportunity is not building a purpose built casino and entertainment complex on the otherside of the morphett bridge (we got a a hospital, more uni, and a research building). Could have then turned tge existing building into a proper central station.nath199 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 02, 2019 10:09 amLove the curves, the finished product will look great and bring a whole new hub of activity and interest but can't help but feel it's a lost opportunity in terms of an iconic tower in this space, imagine that building but all the way up to the 120m - 140m mark, to then be complimented by the Walker tower (if and whenever that goes ahead).

Do we need a 'proper' central station? I mean we won't get any additional rail lines anytime soon, so a proper station would just result in a glorified shopping mall anyway. Not that I would have an issue with that (I do like the grand central stations in Europe and North America), but it would just feel like a waste of money.rev wrote: ↑Tue Jan 29, 2019 1:00 amThe real missed opportunity is not building a purpose built casino and entertainment complex on the otherside of the morphett bridge (we got a a hospital, more uni, and a research building). I do miss the old waiting halls (and IMO it's unseemly to have a gambling den next to the seat of democracy) but we're unlikely to need more station facilities than presently provided - even if country and interstate trains return, there's very few of them and suburban trains would probably be rerouted to the underground loop. I wished the casino had bought the Intercontinental when Hyatt sold out and redeveloped that area (to North Tce and Riverside Centre) then returned the station building to be used as a gallery (à la Musée d'Orsay). It would have remediated the shitty bits of the 80's ASER works and brought more activity.

Well all the lines we do have converge there, why not make it a decent place instead of the crap that exists?floplo wrote: ↑Tue Jan 29, 2019 6:05 amDo we need a 'proper' central station? I agree. The railway station is a good place for the casino and in fact, I would encourage a much more expanded entertainment precinct in that space as the amount of foot traffic that goes through is massive and the amount of space is still under utilized. I don’t know why you would put an entertainment complex on the other side of Morphett Bridge where it’s got no foot traffic, no tram or anything. That side of the oval is dead and even with the health precinct and uni space on the other side of the bridge, it would be a lot harder trying to activate that area than boosting an already populated commuter friendly space.rev wrote: ↑Tue Jan 29, 2019 3:41 pmWell all the lines we do have converge there, why not make it a decent place instead of the crap that exists?floplo wrote: ↑Tue Jan 29, 2019 6:05 amDo we need a 'proper' central station?
