Wow a year to conclude a 250m pathway upgrade... that sounds reasonable.

It's a bit more than a "pathway upgrade". If it's anything like the upgrades at Topham Mall North and Bank Street, there will be a completely new concrete base with relocated services, irrigation pipes and plantings. This will make sure the path doesn't crumble as much as what's been happening at Leigh Street.

If the development at 200 North Tce is going to go ahead they should do the demolition of the Gallerie Buildings etc now or at least at the same time as they are doing the Gawler Pl upgrade.

A snippet from the end of an article re the last tram extension about the proposed revamp of North Terrace between King William Road and Gawler Place and between Frome Street and East Terrace. This explains why many areas have not yet been reinstated fully - with temporary bitumen patches laid.

It will also be interesting to see what the outcome is for the south side of the street which will apparently reflect the north side.

As political parties squabble about who is to blame for the project, Adelaide City Council prepares to embark on its part of the expansion.

A council spokeswoman said it would spend $5 million on the North Tce public realm upgrade.

“This upgrade is to occur on the southern side of the North Terrace in two key areas, between King William Road and Gawler Place and between Frome Street and East Terrace,” she said. “The project is being planned to reflect the northern side of the North Terrace.”

She said it was anticipated it would begin during the middle of this year and be completed before the year is out.

But a key factor on the start date will be when the council can get natural slate pavers that match those already existing other areas of North Tce.

If I recall correctly, isn't the western side of North Terrace (i.e. between the Railway Station and West Terrace) also scheduled to be revamped?

The arbours above the outdoor seating look like they'll be pretty useless, they certainly won't be giving much in the way of shade. Both stretches of the upgrade could do with a lot more trees than currently planned, particularly in car free areas closest to intersection with the mall.

I suspect there is a reason why trees have been proposed for the stretch south of Rundle Mall but not for the stretch to the north. Maintaining access for large vehicles to the canopy thingy maybe (it's 11pm and I can't think of the correct term)...

Published in the late 1960s, it is a critique of Australian design/architecture and in it, the author discusses the strange Australian phobia of trees. He calls Aussie's "arborphobes" who spend unnecessary amounts of time and money cutting down trees to flatten areas for housing/development, when the trees could be incorporated into the design or re-planted to mitigate the lack of shade and heat produced in urban areas...it seems that 50 years later, nobody seems to have learned the lesson!

I've also heard it stated that the suburbs on the Adelaide Plains have more trees now than the area did before it was housing. I don't know if that is comparing to 1836, or to some later time when it was farmland and market gardens.

The issue is that our waterways could be utilised better for every tree to have a drink and thereby making the western suburbs a little greener. However, there are places where green struggles to exist. The Northern suburbs will never be truly green due to lack of water

Adelaide City Council staff have cut four Hindley St upgrades since 2013

Major projects to improve the city’s “ugly cousin”, Hindley St, were axed by Adelaide City Council staff without approval by elected members.

Deputy Lord Mayor Houssam Abiad has launched a broadside at staff after it was revealed they had abandoned four council-endorsed proposals since 2013.

Chief executive Mark Goldstone has conceded staff had taken an “an inadequate approach to Hindley St”.

Upgrades between King William and Morphett streets and three planning projects for the party strip and the broader West End, including a Hindley St masterplan, were quietly shelved. Cr Abiad said urgent action was needed.

“This is long overdue. Previous council administration and parts of this administration have ignored Hindley St, especially between King William and Morphett streets,” he said. “It is a significant tourism destination for the city. It requires day economic activity and day retail offerings as well.

“The state of the street is not providing enough safety for revellers.”

The Sunday Mail revealed last year that a push to make Hindley St a one-way street between Morphett and King William streets had been revived following an incident involving a pedestrian.

Footpaths would be widened to create a tree-lined boulevard, costing $15.5 million.
Cr Abiad said that should be an option.

“We need to have some serious conversations about it,” he said. “Hindley St can no longer be Adelaide’s ugly cousin.

“(One of them should be) considering one-way streets as possibility. The State Government needs to come to the game on this.

Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said Hindley St had been an “ongoing frustration”.

“(But) it is something that we can look at and start doing some implementation in the area,” she said.

Tbh, I wish the council would cease its obsession with continually upgrading already-improved main streets and pay more attention to long-ignored streets like Grenfell and Pirie. Hindley Street doubtlessly needs some maintenance and would benefit from further updates, but other streets are completely neglected and in higher need.
