Im sure our 25M Ferris Wheel will amuse the kiddies and maybe some love-struck teenage couples but it is hardly anything to Baulk at! At the end of the day its no higher than the Ferris Wheel at the showgrounds!

Im not saying that we should have built a 130M Ferris Wheel, because with the Glenelg skyline it would stand out like dogs balls, but we could've built a 40 or 50M variety!

They may also have taken into consideration the higher winds along the coast and decided on something that could be partly protected by The Beachouse building. Just a guess.

Perhaps you have a point, however the 125M "Melbourne Eye" which is being built at the docklands in Melbourne is a very breezy location, yet they still managed to build it (at record speed mind you). Further, as far as i understand the Glenelg Ferris wheel carriages will be sealed and climate controlled (i.e air conditioned/heated)

Some one told me yesterday, the beach house owner was on Amanda Blair's radio show the other day and said it will take around 2 months to assemble.

Even though the ferris wheel wont be as big as others around the world, it will add some interest and movement to that sector of the reserve. I wonder about the viability during winter however I'm sure the developers/operators have thought this through.

There have been further delays with the erection of the ferris wheel, and now it is expected to be operational in November.

The Messenger reports that due to the world class nature of the ferris wheel, its erection has been plagued by engineering problems. Furthermore the Messenger reports that costs have doubled to $1.5 million. The Ferris Wheel is also been delayed by problems with the Holdfast Bay council regarding the leasing arrangeemnt in Colley Reserve. The Beachouse operators want to lease a further 60sqm of Colley reserve in order to build a world class curved fence, which is much more attractive than the previously planned square edged fence. The developers are willing to pay the council up to $20 000 per annum for use of the extra 60sqm. However councillor Mikki Bouchee is reported as saying that she fears that in the future the Beachouse proprietors may remove the ferris wheel and use the land for development. However it is refreshing to note that Mayor Rollond supports the proposal to lease the extrra 60sqm to the developers.

Anymore recent photos of the wheel? I think its another great step for Glenelg. A ticket on this ferris wheel is going to cost an arm and a leg though, haha.

As usual, councils say the most stupid things! If they are concerned that the beachhouse owners might remove the ferris wheel and use the area for development (which given that they just paid $1.5m for the wheel I somehow doubt), then just write into the lease that one of the conditions of use of the area, is that it can ONLY be used for the ferris wheel (D'uh!)

I agree it's not exactly spectacular like some of us had hoped, but it is certainly better than nothing, and will bring more life and fun to Glenelg, and add another much needed tourist attraction for Adelaide (if only an attraction to locals).
