I think they'd be anticipating most of the southbound truck traffic to exit the North South Motorway at the PRexy or Grand Junction road
It's travelling north that will be the problem. 2 lanes will most definitely cause a bottleneck when the rest of it is 3 Lanes leading up to that point. I would hate to see them repeat this potential problem at Emerson.
The actual road is wide enough to accommodate 3 lanes, it’s just that it’s painted as 2 lanes at the moment.
I've not noticed that TBH, and if that is the case, well how bloody stupid.

Someone said the Gallipoli Underpass is 3 metres narrower than the T2T trench, hence the assumption that one direction will need to be only two lanes.

If Bill Shorten's plan that the road is predominantly for commuters from the Southern Suburbs comes to pass, then I imagine that "left lane must exit" northbound at Anzac Highway will actually help traffic to flow quite well. It's hard to imagine that less than a third of the traffic would be CBD commuters.

If the plan remains that it is predominantly a freight route, it is still likely to have a substantial amount of traffic turn off in that area, as there is unlikely to be another exit before Richmond Road if I've read the plans properly.

I would hope in all sincerity that a potential Labor prime minister would have no part in a road who's primary purpose it to get "southern suburbs commuters" into the CBD.

Yeah Bill Shorten doesn't have a plan for the North-South Motorway, what he has is a promise to give $1.2 billion in matched federal funding to the people who do have a plan so that they can get on with it

If they don't have a plan it doesn't matter, as I'll be able to supply one soon.
If they do have a plan it still doesn't matter, as mine will be better value.

I went through the Gallipoli Underpass this afternoon and the 2 lanes seem just a bit wider than normal so if the bike lane and the centre island go there could just be room for 3 lanes each way with a very thin central barrier.

Ok that’s good. So is that Govt owned land now? If so I wonder why it wasn’t built wider/properly in the first place? I mean using another 5m would have been enough.

It is consistently described as "finished", so presumably the detailed plans say that it was made wide enough for whatever the current vision is for that part of the North-South motorway. That additional land may be required for part of an interchange north of the underpass, or might just be the left-overs from having compulsorily acquired whole blocks of land instead of buying and demolishing a house but subdividing so the owner kept their back yard. In contrast, the bridge at Emerson Crossing has consistently been identified as needing replacement or supplementation.

If the section between T2T and ANZAC Highway is going to be upgraded to motorway, I expect there will be opportunities for consultation, however it appears that one side of politics has lost interest north of the tram line.

I don't know how wide the lanes are or need to be, but it looks like it could work with one of the usual concrete wall dividers down the middle, and the bike lane moving to the B road like it would have to anyway

Assuming 21m total width (so maths is easy), 6x 3m lanes (really narrow, most roads are at least 3.3) 2x 1m shoulder, 1x 1m centre median. Increasing to 3.3m lanes increases the required width by over 2m which won't fit.

I tried to compare the overhead to a similar view from T2T, but let's just say Google needs to send one of their camera cars out on a more comprehensive up to date run (click wrong and you can instantly travel in time between 2018, 2013, and 2008)

I don't think there was a vision that included a full motorway when Gallipoli Underpass was built.

It was always described as merely a 'non-stop route'. I wrote to then Minister for Transport Patrick Conlon and asked about the standard of the road (i.e. whether it was to be freeway standard) and he responded by saying that a decision on the standard of the corridor would be made once complete.

I was looking at that last night. It looks like it was intended to be a form of permanent green area, but I could definitely see a northern exit, right after the creek, in that space.

Would that mean they then buy out all of the Eastern side houses from 547 to 515, from the creek bridge to Marleston Avenue, for the southerly tunnels exit?
