In Melbourne, they'd have the works done in 3 days.

But here, they gotta stretch it out for more money for workers.

The accompanying email specifically mentions crews working 24/7 across the site duting the closure period. The newsletter (p.4) spells out in detail the scope of work during the closure. Of note is the first item, final excavations and the construction of retaining walls. Even Melbourne can't do that sort of work in a three day timescale!!

I don't know why the occupation has blown out to three weeks, but the Advertiser is right to criticise it. 'Twas originally planned to be much less time, though I can't remember exactly how much less.

Most of the excavations and retaining walls are already done — there's only a little bit at the ends still to do. Should take a few days, bur not weeks.

If you think three weeks is reasonable, consider how long it takes you to change a tyre. Then consider how long it takes a Formula 1 pit crew to change a tyre. Things can be done very quickly when you're well organized.

As for how long it would take in Melbourne, I've no idea, but I very much doubt it changes according to the party in government.

3 weeks isn't reasonable becuase a team in the F1 can change a tyre quicker than i can change my tyre.

Surely if we are going to be critical, we need to have something more compelling that this?

The closure will inconvenice me, but honestly 3 weeks is fine. A few years ago we had a year or closures and the Tonsley line was out of action for two or three years....

They also don't bring F1 pit crews into do local go karting events. Adelaide is not a place where we have millions of people relying on our trains, so three weeks is pretty appropriate as far as I'm concerned.

If you look through the scope of works outlined in the March newsletter, then it becomes apparent that the rail closure period is also being used to undertake other upgrades further along the rail corridor beyond where the Oaklands crossing upgrade is being finished.

Am I missing something, how does the Oaklands Crossing cause any disruption to the Tonsley line?
To give my 2 cents worth three weeks to connect in the new rail is ridiculous. What part of it can possibly take that long that can't be done prior while the existing line is still open?

They'll need to turn the overhead lines off, and the substation is in Londsale so it can't be isolated from the Seaford line

+ As AG says, there's lots of small upgrades and things being done right along the line, hence the Tonsley line can't run.

Any word on whether the old station shelters might be reused elsewhere? With their length, you could cover two platforms at two separate stations...
