Something else I forgot to say that Harbo said that was funny. Judith Brine and the other two that had concerns were saying before 9am and after 3pm the glass facade could cause issues with refections ect and Harbo said "Well why don't we just not approve any building with glass incase there is reflections" Everyone laughed at his comments there too. He was quite funny.

You are right Will re: BHP and they are also leasing some space on Currie Street. I think it is that old building just to the west of Westpac before the large government building. Given the recent decision to tenant a huge new scraper in Perth I would think there is a possibility for BHP to tenant this building or maybe CC8 instead. It will depend on a number of factors, particularly rental rates etc though.

Yeah beamer the few meetings I have attended before have always been entertaining. They like to joke around a fair bit.

CBD to develop new-look ‘Permanent Wave’


Adelaide will get a brand new ‘permanent wave’ when Arturo Taverna’s hair salon is replaced by a state-of-the-art office building featuring an iconic curved glass façade as approved tonight by Adelaide City Council’s Development Assessment Panel.

Measuring over 120 metres high, the building approved for Currie Street will be slightly shorter than Westpac Tower and will feature a dynamic curved glass frontage providing a new architectural presence to the City.

Offering thirty levels, or 30,000 square metres of office space as well as a gym, pool and lounge area, the building will cater to the increasing number of City workers and businesses.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison said the building will create a new landmark for the City.

“Arturo’s is famous for creating styles that draw attention, and this building will lift the ‘permanent wave’ to a whole new level.

“This is a building that people will notice, and one that will become part of the landscape of the City. Catering for hundreds of City workers, this building provides a new iconic marker for Adelaide.

“As the latest in Adelaide’s nation-leading surge of 5 star green-rated buildings, this development encompasses elements such as a minimum of 70% stormwater re-use, double glazing for thermal control, and vertical louvers for air flow.

“It’s exciting for Adelaide’s growing population that more developments are being approved with a focus on sustainability,” said Mr Harbison.

As for today's Advertiser, not a single mention. Even with Tuesday's having a Commercial Property section, that lift-out had Elizabeth House on North Terrace as its headline story. I'll keep an eye out for it in tomorrow's paper.

They probably completed the Commercial Section before the council meeting, though there was a article about this in the Sunday Mail with the Lights Vision shot.

Well, the glazing on the cantilevered section just needs to be triple glazed - problem solvered!

LOL. Regarding glare, double or triple glazing on its own won't be the solution. They will use a non-reflective film to reduce heat and glare. Double-glazing will also add further insulation against heat transfer and sound transmission.

There are other solutions, like: anti-glare coatings (that scatter light), tinted and reflective films. There's also heat-absorbing glass (coloured grey, bronze or blue-green) that reduces glare and brightness.

Glass landmark for Adelaide CBD

Adelaide City Council has approved the construction of a 32-storey glass building in Currie Street.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison says the building's design will make it a city landmark.

The architect, Tony Giannone, believes it will reinvigorate and rejuvenate the skyline.

"We have not seen anything like this go up for a while," he said.

"It will complement what is already here and probably take us into, I suppose, a new decade of building and hopefully prosperity in the state."

Mr Giannone says it will be an environmentally friendly building and will have a minimum of 70 per cent stormwater reuse.

Well this is good news. The iconic nature of this building would make naming rights a valuable marketing tool. Hopefully an anchor tenant can be found quickly. This design is a step-up for Adelaide's office architecture. As the developer rightly pointed out other developers will need to put more effort into their designs to compete for tenants. I imagine the City Central developers will be having a good look at their own designs to make sure they can compete. The bar has been rising bit by bit in Adelaide's office market and kudos must go to the Law Courts, CC, SAWater and Aurora for this gradual improvement. These developers have thrown out the challenge and aimed much higher though (no pun intended). Finally Architecture in Adelaide has called GAME ON. While Adelaide's recovery continues and turns into a boom we can expect to see some interesting buildings added to our streets.

The challenge for ACC now is to bring our public spaces up to the same level, our squares, streets and parklands all need to be upgraded to provide the supporting spaces for the extra people attracted by these new developments. The State Govt must step up and provide the public transport to efficiently deliver people into the city.

This is a well designed building which is the equal of any other high-rise constructed in Australia. I do however have some minor concerns about the design. The curving cantilevered element is dangerously close to being a gimmick and will rely on exceptional detailing to prevent it descending to such. It will not however cause any more glare issues than any other glass building. The preliminary structural engineering for this element would have been done prior to seeking approval to make sure the building is achievable so I do not expect this aspect of the design to be dumbed down. The relationship of the building to the side streets does not appear to have been well resolved. Hopefully this will be further developed as the project proceeds. The relationship of the portion facing Currie St has an awkward relationship to the remainder of the building and the cantilevered section in particular.

The site is very awkward and so the Architects must be applauded for creating such an iconic design from a site which I don't think anyone on this forum would have ever dreamt would hold our city's 2nd tallest building..
