Very interesting. That Woolworths isn't all that old.
It's been there since at least 1989 that I know of.

Anyway, they didn't close when Coles opened directly across the other side of the mall so I don't think they'll close because a Foodland is opening.
There are 2 Coles stores in the city. The Central Market one should be converted into IGA.
For starters, my avatar is the well-known Adelaide Aquatic Centre insignia from 1989.

That's not a "conversion", that would be a change of ownership, which would require Coles to decide to close and sell the lease to a competitor.

It was open earlier than that, more like the mid-to-late 70s. Coles and Woolworths have different markets and offerings. Woolworths have opted for the "come grab some items for your lunch" or "here's lunch already made for you!" Coles have purely offered supermarket offerings. The new Foodland will very much be working on a similar model to that of Woolies Rundle Mall.

I'd be very surprised to see Woolworths leave the city and especially busy Rundle Mall, unless they have another location lined up.

Just Jeans Rundle Mall has closed, walked passed yesterday and there was a notice on the doors saying closed due to end of lease. Surprising cause they had no closing down sale or anything. Lights were still on in the shop as well.

Yes I saw Solly Lew (owner of JJ) on TV saying they couldn’t agree with the landlord on the rent/new lease. Not sure if he wanted a rent reduction or wouldn’t pay increased rent. Anyone know who the owner of property is?

Not in its current configuration where it is now. It trades well, so I too don't think it's because of the Foodland.
It changed to the current configuration only 15 years ago or so, my aunt and uncle owned the Wendy's that was in the front corner, until Woolworths closed for the renovation, and yanked the lease from them in the process.

Why does it feel so much more recent than that?

On reflection, I think they might have gone and done yet another renovation on the place some time after 2010, because I know the Wendy's lease was given to a Kodak outlet, and clearly nothing about that store or its former layout and location exists in the current format. I spent a lot more time in Rundle in the early 2000s when I was an Adelaide Uni student than In any period before or since, so I have quite a few experience gaps.

An Aldi would be better....

I use the Coles at Central Market quite a bit, while it does the job it really is in need of a spruce up. You'd imagine it classifies as a "flagship" S.A store, so i'm surprised it hasn't had a refurb in line with the Burnside Village and Castle Plaza stores.

And I agree, the city does need an Aldi. Is there some kind of trading or competition laws that prevent one from opening in the CBD? Any info or opinions would be much appreciated.

I think there would be a lack of suitable space in the CBD for an Aldi. They are more suburban in nature, I don't think any of the other CBDs in Australia have one.

I wouldn't have thought lack of space would be an issue in the CBD, especially the south west corner for instance. Off the top of my head, the large empty block on the corner of Gouger and Selby Streets would be a perfect location for an Aldi.

But yeah, I agree that the city may be the wrong demographic for an Aldi store. They are targeted more at the suburban family types on a budget.
