[SWP] Re: Lot 14 (Old RAH Site)
Is it just me or does all this demolition even before a solid plan for the site has been finalised seem a bit hasty and short-sighted?

There's a lot of contamination at the site so demolition and remediation is a lengthy process. We ought to be ready to go with something once that's all finished. But definitely a failure that plans haven't been fully settled more than a decade after we first knew the site would be vacated.baytram366 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2019 8:53 amIs it just me or does all this demolition even before a solid plan for the site has been finalised seem a bit hasty and short-sighted?

To me it seems as they (Liberal State Govt) just make it up as they go. I guess it has helped they won & have been awarded Fed Govt $$ for the National space agency etc
Btw, I still don’t understand why the JV with C&G as chosen by the previous Labour Govt was then re-negged upon? I am pretty sure they agreed to do (or change) the master plan to satisfy whatever the Govt wanted.

Apart from them wanting to go different directions (i.e. debate over residential component), IIRC there was bad blood after C&G backed out of purchasing the State Admin Centre (thereby depriving the government's budget of an expected +$100 million windfall).how good is he wrote: ↑Fri Jun 14, 2019 10:15 pmTo me it seems as they (Liberal State Govt) just make it up as they go. A large crawler crane has been set up at the east end near where the Cardiac building was. This crane would have a capacity of around 200t. I'm not sure what it is being used for. Click on picture for bigger.

I think I prefer the new one to be honest - I like the mix of smaller, more individual buildings as opposed to a couple of large ones, although the northernmost one does look a bit like the Sirius building in Sydney which is no bad thing.
I'm also really glad that the new plan allows for the Eleanor Harrald building to be retained as it's pretty unique for buildings in Adelaide. I've only recently found out that it used to look quite different - the large windows on the Frome Road side of the building were originally balconies...

It’s a great building. Very glad it’s remaining too.
Adelaide has some great modernist (I guess this one is deco?) and brutalist buildings, which sadly are a bit unappreciated compared to the 19th century ones.

Funny you should say so, as the ABC has just posted an article about that very fact. Good read: 'Adelaide's brutalist architecture celebrated in London as wrecking balls close in'gnrc_louis wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2019 9:58 amAdelaide has some great modernist (I guess this one is deco?) and brutalist buildings, which sadly are a bit unappreciated compared to the 19th century ones.

Stuart has been a fantastic advocate for modernist architecture in Adelaide, and I highly recommend going on one of his walking tours.SRW wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2019 11:36 amFunny you should say so, as the ABC has just posted an article about that very fact. Also, Sandy Wilkinson again shows himself as an idiot thinking that modernist buildings were as a rule built inferior to Victorian buildings in quality and materials.
