North Tce upgrade project far from hitting the gas

Adelaide City Council has hit the brakes on its $4.5 million North Tce upgrade, with work to complement the new tramline pushed out yet another year.

Work on the street’s footpath, which has been promised since 2018, is now scheduled to start in July 2021 because of gasworks complications.

It was originally supposed to begin last financial year.

The path has been designed to cover two sections: between King William St and Kintore Ave, and between Frome St and East Tce.

To make up for the delay, the council will spend $30,000 to make sure the existing footpath stretches are “presentable and safe”.

Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said starting the work too early risked ratepayers footing a repair bill.

“We need the gas networks to finish their works and then we will do what we need to do,” Ms Verschoor said.

“You saw what happened in a couple of other streets around the city – we finished Waymouth St and I think three months later they went back in and dug it up.”

The delay means $726,000 worth of custom-made pavers, currently under construction, would have to be put in storage.

The council did not say how much storage would cost.

A council report said the current cast iron gas main running below the footpath needed upgrading to improve pressure, so open trenching would be needed.

Adelaide City Council place director Garry Herdegen said “significant work” had been completed to determine the condition of underground gas services and other utilities.

APA Group, which is completing the gasworks, was contacted for comment about whether the project would disrupt pedestrians and motorists.

Work should be completed a year after construction starts, a council report said.

Adelaide City Council has been contacted for further comment.

Just on city laneways, it appears the proposal to cover Moonta St Chinatown has (thankfully) morphed into a proposal for an artwork/lighting canopy.

The heart of Chinatown will have a multi-million makeover as part of a push to attract more tourists and boost local business.

The State Government and the Adelaide City Council today announced plans for a $4 million revamp of Moonta St.

Plans include new granite pavers, more outdoor dining areas, new trees, creative lighting and more shade.

Chinatown Adelaide of South Australia president Herman Chin said his community looked forward to the revitalisation of its main street.

He hoped it would attract even more people to the cultural hub, as well as make it a destination for events.

The government and council will each foot $2 million of the bill.

The project builds on creative lighting and murals that were revealed on Moonta St last month.

State Liberal MP for Adelaide Rachel Sanderson said the upgrade would be a tourism drawcard.

“Chinatown is one of our most visited tourist destinations offering a food and cultural experience you can’t find anywhere else and this upgrade will no doubt increase foot traffic to the area which is great news for our local traders,” Ms Sanderson said.

Adelaide City Council Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said the upgrade was an “exciting development” for the much-loved street.

“This work and the creative and functional lighting will make Moonta Street an even better place to visit, as well as making the street safer at night which is good news for traders and visitors,” Ms Verschoor said.

The Advertiser reported in December 2019 that better lighting and more security cameras are planned for Chinatown in a bid to alleviate traders’ concerns about increasing crime in the area.

It came following an audit of the precinct were traders raised concerns about begging, public urination, theft and used syringes being left on the ground.

Lol, a 'tourism drawcard'. I'm sure tourists will be jumping out of their seats to check out China Town's new pavers and trees. By all means do the upgrade, it's needed but if tourists aren't spending money in this area anymore, there are bigger questions to be asked.
