With the recent stepping down of UoA Vice Chancellor and such, there was mention in the media that the university were seriously exploring a northern suburbs campus, and were having these discussions with City of Playford, most likely to position themselves in competition with UNISA at Mawson Lakes, however with Tafe at Port Adelaide touted for closure, I can't see why UoA wouldn't consider the Port? It's an emerging hub both for residential and possibly business, there would already be a campus-worth of facilities that the university could tap into and from the government's position, it would help strengthen the area in terms of day-time foot-traffic, might also create a student culture down there to help sustain some of the bars. I seem to recall back when Newport Keys was on the table that a university campus was part of that proposal, but I believe the idea there was to entice interstate/overseas institutions to set it up.

I've always thought it was a massive missed opportunity that UniSA expanded at Mawson Lakes rather than in the Port. I think it's important to avoid duplication or dilution of campus life, but if there's still some opportunity for higher ed to set up here, then it ought to be pursued. Perhaps certain defence & engineering degrees can be taught there. UoA should probably be doing something more substantial with its Roseworthy campus also.

Yeah, but I'm sure the Mawson Lakes developments influenced how much that campus was chosen to grow.

Quite possibly they did, and the presence of the University has probably influenced the development of Mawson Lakes - both the social hub and the high-tech employment precinct.

We note that there has been a development application lodged for the "Vacant land" on McLaren Parade Port Adelaide. A 19 Million dollar proposal by the Kystepher Nominees Pty Ltd, "Construction of a 6 Storey Accommodation Building with Restaurant/Bar, Retail and Car parking with a Porte Cochere - McLaren Wharf Hotel (040/L074/20)" We will follow this with interest.

This is expected to be approved at the next SCAP meeting.

I know this might sound a bit anal, but it is RECOMMENDED to be approved, not expected. The SCAP will make their own determination based on the report given to them.

The improvements from the original plans are great. This is an iconic site which was the location of the first wharf and the first warehouse in the inner Port, opened in 1840. The hurdle of the original height limit (5 floors) looks like being negotiated through, after the other improvements. Includes the long overdue upgrade to traffic flow and pedestrian amenity along McLaren Pde at the rear of the development.

Thats some great news for the port. That area has been vacant for as long as I can remember.

Hopefully Stage 2 is not too far away, as not the whole block will be covered. Either that, or they at least put up a pop-up park in its place until Stage 2 can commence.

I understand that the block at the lighthouse end is owned by another party. Hence the design emphasis of the Hotel is focused on the other end with the lighthouse end being meh. Whoever it is that owns that block will be under pressure to produce a high end construction that will honour its iconic location. Meanwhile a pop-up installation will be highly appreciated.

Port Adelaide, McLaren Parade, $1.85 million plan to turn it into ‘premium boulevard’

Port Adelaide Enfield Council has released a flyover showcasing its $1.85 million plan to upgrade McLaren Parade and help “bring the Port back to life”.

The video highlights the vision to transform the strip, from Commercial Road to Timpson Street, into a “premium boulevard” that gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists.

Under the plan, the road, which sits in the heart of the Port, would become a “vibrant, green, pedestrian-focused environment” that would enable the area to continue to grow.

The street would be made one-way and kerbs removed, landscaping and trees increased, public art installed and spaces created that allowed people to gather.



“This McLaren Parade streetscape project links with a number of other exciting projects we are undertaking in the area, which will encourage visitors and residents alike to use and enjoy the streets and wharves of Port Adelaide,” the video said.

The State Government would contribute $600,000 to the project, and the council would fund the remainder of its cost.

The road project would complement a world-class Rydges Hotel that has been approved for McLaren Parade, just metres from the Port Adelaide waterfront.

The six-storey hotel will have a restaurant and outdoor dining on its ground floor and 131 hotel rooms on levels one to five.

The council is planning to undertake the road upgrade in two stages, to work in with the construction of the hotel.



Stage one is scheduled to start in the first half of next year and will be from Timpson to Lipson streets.

This will be followed by stage two works, from Lipson Street to Commercial Road.

Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Claire Boan said last week the McLaren Parade upgrade would create an “exciting public space in the heart of the Port”.

“This is a key part or reigniting our spectacular river and local heritage precinct, and we can’t wait to see the area come to life with people walking and cycling through the revitalised shard precinct,” Ms Boan said.

The council is currently asking the community for its views on the road upgrade.
