Perhaps certain defence & engineering degrees can be taught there. UoA should probably be doing something more substantial with its Roseworthy campus also.

Very good point. Notre Dame was instrumental in revitalising Fremantle during the 90s.

By the same token it's unlikely Mawson Lakes would be as successful as it is without UniSA there, and given the MFP proposals it made sense to have a uni campus there that does a lot of engineering and IT stuff.

The Levels Campus (now called Mawson Lakes) of the South Australian Institute of Technology (which merged with CAEs to become UniSA) predates the MFP by 20 years.

Quite possibly they did, and the presence of the University has probably influenced the development of Mawson Lakes - both the social hub and the high-tech employment precinct.

I know this might sound a bit anal, but it is RECOMMENDED to be approved, not expected. The SCAP will make their own determination based on the report given to them.

The improvements from the original plans are great. This is an iconic site which was the location of the first wharf and the first warehouse in the inner Port, opened in 1840. The hurdle of the original height limit (5 floors) looks like being negotiated through, after the other improvements. Includes the long overdue upgrade to traffic flow and pedestrian amenity along McLaren Pde at the rear of the development.

Hopefully Stage 2 is not too far away, as not the whole block will be covered. Either that, or they at least put up a pop-up park in its place until Stage 2 can commence.

I understand that the block at the lighthouse end is owned by another party. Hence the design emphasis of the Hotel is focused on the other end with the lighthouse end being meh. Whoever it is that owns that block will be under pressure to produce a high end construction that will honour its iconic location. Meanwhile a pop-up installation will be highly appreciated.

Port Adelaide Enfield Council has released a flyover showcasing its $1.85 million plan to upgrade McLaren Parade and help “bring the Port back to life”.

The video highlights the vision to transform the strip, from Commercial Road to Timpson Street, into a “premium boulevard” that gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists.

Under the plan, the road, which sits in the heart of the Port, would become a “vibrant, green, pedestrian-focused environment” that would enable the area to continue to grow.

The street would be made one-way and kerbs removed, landscaping and trees increased, public art installed and spaces created that allowed people to gather.

“This McLaren Parade streetscape project links with a number of other exciting projects we are undertaking in the area, which will encourage visitors and residents alike to use and enjoy the streets and wharves of Port Adelaide,” the video said.

The State Government would contribute $600,000 to the project, and the council would fund the remainder of its cost.

The road project would complement a world-class Rydges Hotel that has been approved for McLaren Parade, just metres from the Port Adelaide waterfront.

The six-storey hotel will have a restaurant and outdoor dining on its ground floor and 131 hotel rooms on levels one to five.

The council is planning to undertake the road upgrade in two stages, to work in with the construction of the hotel.

Stage one is scheduled to start in the first half of next year and will be from Timpson to Lipson streets.

This will be followed by stage two works, from Lipson Street to Commercial Road.

Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Claire Boan said last week the McLaren Parade upgrade would create an “exciting public space in the heart of the Port”.

“This is a key part or reigniting our spectacular river and local heritage precinct, and we can’t wait to see the area come to life with people walking and cycling through the revitalised shard precinct,” Ms Boan said.

The council is currently asking the community for its views on the road upgrade.
