Any other guesses what else might fall through due to covid? I’d guess a few of the hotels?

Considering it takes 2+ years I am surprised by this. It wasn’t due to open until 2023!

"due" ?

This thread has been going for 11 years. Honestly, just close it until piling has started...

These projects are also built based on projected growth. Assuming things are back to "normal" in 2023 tourist numbers will likely still be lower than initially projected due to missing out on a year or two of growth.

This project is definitely not on hold. Articles suggesting it is on hold are false/wrong. At this moment in time, the project is definitely moving ahead. As I've stated before, design is taking a bit longer than planned, that is all. Of course in the current economic climate, anything could happen to any project at any time, but for now, this one is underway.

Quite a big reduction in this one.

I hope there's not a cheapening of the design/finished product associated with this application.

Wishful thinking, but if there is, I wouldn't mind SCAP reconsidering allowing the existing building to be demolished.

'Pirie St Hyatt hotel gets downsized' as reported at InDaily

Key info:
Works were due to have begun earlier this year, but CEL Australia executive director Robert Lee today told InDaily construction had been pushed back to early 2021.

He said the hotel would have 285 rooms, rather than the 295 originally planned, with the number of floors dropping from 28 storeys, to 22.

Two storeys of private suites as well as three levels of car parking and an indoor plant room had been axed, but the property would have an event space, market café, swimming pool, fitness facilities and rooftop bar.

Lee said the project’s total was expected to cost between $150 million and $160 million, rather than the $180 million previously estimated.
I wonder if the deletion of an 'indoor plant room' means yet another building with an ugly extrusion on top?

The reduction in car parking is interesting too -- I can imagine council objecting to SCAP.

I was never quite comfortable with the idea of demolishing a local heritage place, but consoled myself with the knowledge that what was replacing it, had some good height and was of high architectural quality. The height has now disappeared, and it seems judging from the vibe that the design will also be cheapened. We do not need another boring 70m glass box. I hope this is refused.

“The whole building has been made more efficient,” he said.
where is the wank emoticon?

No point having a rooftop bar that looks into another building. At this height it will be blocked in almost all directions especially with the planet tower. I think it’s best to put on hold till they can build something on site that is deserving of such a site. It’s not like we are desperate for new hotel rooms. Their are plenty of others going ahead.

Same here. It will set a terrible precedent if this is approved.
