Duke of Kent launches new Adelaide university

Adelaide’s reputation as the “University City” has been further enhanced, with His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent today officially launching Cranfield University in Adelaide.

World-renowned Cranfield University, a centre for postgraduate defence and security studies and research, has set-up a Business Development Centre in Adelaide - the first time it has established a presence outside of the United Kingdom.

South Australian Premier Mike Rann says this development has reinforced Adelaide’s growing reputation as Australia’s ‘university city of the future’.

“This is the second prestigious international university to establish a permanent presence in our city following Carnegie Mellon University’s arrival in South Australia in March last year,” Mr Rann says.

“We are delighted that The Duke of Kent, an Official Visitor of Cranfield University, has made the trip to Adelaide for today’s opening.”

Cranfield University is the primary academic provider to the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom.

The Adelaide-based Business Development Centre, to be based in Adelaide's historic Torrens Building on Victoria Square, will offer long and short courses to defence organisations and industry professionals in areas including electronic warfare, integrated logistics and explosives.

Premier Rann says Cranfield’s relationship with South Australia is a natural partnership.

“With our booming defence industry and growing reputation as an education exporter, it’s no surprise that Adelaide has been chosen by Cranfield as the ideal place to deliver its postgraduate and executive education programs,” he says.

“As well as developing a suite of defence degrees and courses specifically tailored to the Australian market, Cranfield will also take part in broader Australian research programs.

“This will further partnerships with agencies such as the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, Department of Defence and the Defence Materiel Organisation.”

Yesterday, Professor Hugh Griffiths, Principal of Cranfield University's Defence College of Management and Technology, signed an agreement with the South Australian Government as well as memoranda of understanding with Flinders University and Carnegie Mellon.

Cranfield now has formal relationships with every South Australian University, enabling joint teaching and research opportunities.

GRANDSTAND plans for an $82 million replacement of the Adelaide Oval members' pavilion have gone before the city council for approval.

It will bump the ground's capacity from 30,000 to almost 40,000 spectators.

Good news for AO, bad news in warranting the viability of building a super-stadium on the railyards site.

Hopefully the upgrade will spur incentive for the Goverment to revitalise the tramline extension to North Adelaide, as originally proposed.

Seems like the meaning of world's most pictureseque cricket ground has little meaning to you? Even the current expansion proposal threatens this image that Adelaide so proudly acclaims. Even before that, with the construction of the horrid eastern stands, I think AO may not live to last its time.

Well what cruise control said did make very good economic sense.

However in terms of ensuring AO keeps its 1800's look and feel, I guess it doesn't...

If you demolished those ugly eastern stands (i agree with you on that) and built a decent grandstand of the same deign as the proposed western stand there and on the southern mound a much larger capacity would be easily obtained. and you could still keep the northern hill.

Adelaide oval is picturesque to me because of its location and surroundings. not those ugly excuses for grandstands that surround the pitch.

Hows this for a thought.....an idea that will add alot of uniqueness about adelaide oval and will make it stand out.

We can upgrade the stadium to something a bit bigger than AAMI Stadium and use it for the footy and cricket.

Now I know everyone loves to sit on the grass and watch the cricket, how bout when the footy season finishes and the cricket is about to start, they have the concession areas set up in a way that some seating areas can be removed and converted into a soft substance that can accommodate a picnic or just lying about?

Any thoughts on that?
