Which is actually being used in the under-construction Barelona metro line 9. Their TBM is 11.95 m in diameter and they will use small metro trains which are 2.71 m wide, while Adelaide metro trains are 3.2 m wide. So it's not unrealistic for TBMs of that size to bore a single twin track tunnel for Adelaide metro.

Coming from the north to the city, we can use Port Road too. I agree that the current bottleneck seems to be at Henley Beach Road, but I have not noticed if this is vehicles coming from the motorway and seeking to turn at HBR. I had assumed it is predominantly traffic seeking to continue straight on, interrupted by east/west traffic causing the lights to be red. This would be solved by grade separation, with or without an interchange.

I think your concern about clearing the ramp is the reason why most of the exits between PRE and Sturt Road are designed to be mid-block. This doesn't seem to be the case for Regency Road, but presumably they start far enough back to be OK.

That’s an interesting approach. But I think even with the couple extra metres that our TBMs would give it would be a very tight fit, if they fit at all. Those metro trains are slightly smaller than our fleet, and they use rigid overhead electrification instead of traditional catenary which seems to allow slightly lower clearance as well. Repurposing a TBM that we already own for this kind of purpose is a fantastic cost saver, but I’m not certain our trains would actually fit. Even a couple of centimetres makes all the difference, as NSW learned when ordering their new intercity train fleet.

Another $1 Billion has been added to the projects overall budget, taking it to $9.9 billion, to ensure each tunnel has 3x traffic lanes on each side and that there is sufficient space for an emergency vehicle slip lane. I don't know who said it, but these changes were 'to ensure they get it right first time, future proofing the project.'

The media are trying to sensationalise the issue by calling it a cost 'blowout'.

$1b is a relatively cheap fix in the grand scheme of things to ensure that this project has sufficient capacity in future. A good call.

South Road twin tunnel entry and exit points revealed, along with properties to be acquired


The southern entry and exit points of the first South Rd tunnel have been revealed in an official map, along with the neighbouring properties marked for acquisition.

More than 60 homes and businesses will be demolished in phase one of South Australia’s largest infrastructure project, the expansive 4km tunnel dig under South Road.

Work on the two parallel tunnels of the North-South Corridor will start in 2023.

The Advertiser can reveal the southern entry and exit points of the first two parallel tunnels for the final stage of the North-South Corridor, as well as the businesses and homes in the firing line.

In the $9.9bn Torrens to Darlington project’s first major milestone, the Transport Department has released a map of the “southern laydown area” – a launch site for the assembly of two tunnel-boring machines.

The machines will be assembled on the western side of South Road at Clovelly Park, in an area between Selgar Ave and Princes Parade.

Work at the site will start in early 2023 and is expected to take between 12 to 18 months in preparation alone. The area will become a hub of activity with various workshops, sheds and portable offices.

A total of 64 properties must be demolished to make way for the launch site. Among those in the marked area include the Tonsley Hotel, InkInSkin Tattoo Studio and the Clovelly Park Chiropractic Clinic.

Transport Minister Corey Wingard said negotiations had already begun with affected property owners in the area. It is understood all 64 had been contacted.

“When we announced this project, we made a commitment to let the community know as soon as possible when activities would begin in particular locations and which properties were likely to be impacted,” Mr Wingard said.

“By announcing that we’ve started property acquisitions in the southern laydown area, we’re ensuring everyone who has a stake in this project and in the local community is aware of the progress that’s been made and how the next steps will play out.”

The final reference design for the rest of the 10.5km upgrade will be completed later this year.

A total of 390 properties must be acquired for the project.

Slashing travel time by 24 minutes, the Torrens to Darlington project will include two sets of parallel tunnels with three lanes going each way under South Road, as well as a series of surface and lowered motorways.

Construction is expected to generate more than 4500 jobs, making it the biggest infrastructure project in the state’s history.

Due to be completed in 2028, it is the final stage of the 78km non-stop North-South Corridor between Gawler and Old Noarlunga.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher said revealing the southern tunnel launch site was an “important milestone” for the project.

“Significant work has already been done to progress this project, including hundreds of geotechnical investigations and the design for relocation of important utility services such as water, gas and telecommunications.”

Beyond Bouldering is in the middle of renovating the old Ferrari Formalwear building on the corner of Princes Parade and South Road (at the top edge of the work zone) into their new third location. Looks like they won’t be there for long, if they end up opening at all.

Further details on the Tunnel Laydown Area can be found at https://dit.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf ... 6.7.21.pdf.

It states that "Work at the site will start in early 2023 and will take 12 to 18 months to prepare the site for the arrival of the TBMs" I infer that the tunneling will not start until late 2025.

Unavoidable, but those are the residents I have the most sympathy for. Along the uncompleted sections of South Road it's been clear for years that it would need to be upgraded at some point, so it was reasonable to expect that homes could be acquired at some point. If not for the tunnel entrance though it wouldn't have been expected that houses that far back would ever need to be acquired.
