Further Site Investigation works as per E-Mail received today:

Fleurieu Connections
Site Investigation Works
January 2022
The Australian and South Australian governments have committed a total of $560 million to fund the Fleurieu Connections Main South Road and Victor Harbor Road duplication projects. These projects will result in safer and faster journeys for motorists and provide a vital boost for local tourism, communities and support hundreds of jobs each year during construction.

The next stage of site investigation works will commence soon and will include surveying, service location and geotechnical investigations. These works are required to better understand the existing ground conditions.

These works will occur along Main South Road (between Seaford and Aldinga), Victor Harbor Road (between Main South Road and McLaren Vale) and along Quarry and Seaview roads, McLaren Vale.

To ensure the works can be undertaken safely and efficiently, most of the works will be undertaken at night from Monday to Friday between the hours of 7pm to 6am.

Works outside the main road corridor and on side roads will be undertaken during the day from Monday to Saturday 7am to 5pm.

To safely undertake these works, speed and lane restrictions will be in place. Signage will be used to advise road users of changed traffic conditions.

Some removal of woody weeds will also be undertaken for construction, including under and around the Pedler Creek Bridge. These works will be undertaken during the day.

Access to properties and businesses will be maintained throughout the works wherever possible, with advance notice provided if there is a need to temporarily restrict driveway access. Please continue to support local businesses.

The Department appreciate your co-operation and patience while these important works are undertaken. Every effort will be made to minimise impacts to landowners and the community.

A further update about the projects will be provided shortly.

For more information, please contact the project team via phone on 1300 794 880 or email [email protected]

Kind regards

Since when has environmental impact statements ever got in the way of a politician or transport department proceeding with projects anyway?

Case in example, North East Link in Melbourne. The EIS is absolutely scathing of the project. A 16 lane freeway is still getting built anyway.
The approach to infrastructure in Victoria is very different to anywhere else I have worked. The Government in Victoria has very broad powers when it comes to infrastructure. But NELP is still subject to the EPBC Act. Part of the reason for tunnels will be to minimise approval requirements under the EPBC Act ie native vegetation offsets and impacts on Commonwealth and reduce land acquisition.

Car culture and big, expensive road projects have always been endemic in Victoria and Melbourne.

Not really. They are investing significantly in rail infrastructure. There are only two significant road projects going at the moment and a smattering of smaller ones. NELP will change that of course once it gets going. What I was referring to more was the Government's powers under the MTPFA and elsewhere to ram its projects through.

guess we'll be getting that extension after all; now who wants to take on a proper Old Noarlunga bypass?

I've done a video on the progress of works on Victor Harbor Road. Main South Road will be coming very soon.

Thanks Norm for the update.

This project serves well for future proofing local traffic movements particularly between McLaren Vale, Old Noarlunga and Seaford Heights.

However, what has been overlooked is the traffic movements between Adelaide and Victor Harbor. There needs to be a freeway standard road connecting these two cities. See attachment for proposed route.

That straight line route from the end of the Southern Expressway to Victor Harbor Road at McLaren Vale is not as straight forward as it looks. There are large hills flanking either side of the Onkaparinga River on that alignment, so the route would require significant earthworks, bridges and/or tunnels to achieve - i.e. it's going to be very expensive per kilometre!

We moved mountains and built tunnels for the SE Freeway. No reason why it can't be done again.

[U/C] Main South Road & Victor Harbor Road Upgrade

#58 Post by Spotto » Tue Jul 12, 2022 9:01 am

Hopefully right now they’re making a decision on duplicating through to Willunga and Sellicks and they’ll roll crews across to Stage 2 when the current duplication works begin to wind down in 2023-24.

But, that would be an sensible approach… something governments aren’t that known for

The Malinauskas Government committed to duplicating Main South Road all the way to Sellicks Beach, no news on extending the Victor Harbor Road upgrade though.

We could either bat a big suspension bridge or a viaduct with lots of columns like we see on British railway shows. Either way is mostly over the park.
