people already have had near misses on bank street and that is a different design with more obstacles

Culture has to start somewhere - we didn't scratch off the motorway because of all the near misses and crumpled front ends from hitting the collapsing safety barriers, caused by people who have no idea how to drive on a motorway, while trying to merge fron the right lane to the left lane off ramp 300m too late.

On the one hand we have the countless examples internationally showing that if you make cities very pedestrian friendly, including sensible shared spaces, it overall increases the quality of cities.
On the other hand we have the speculation that Adelaide residents are special and unique, and any day now it will all descend into a bloodbath.

The purpose of a shared space is to open the entire area up to pedestrians - rather than confining them to just the small footpaths at the edges.
Priority of users of the space is as follows:
1) Pedestrians
2) Cyclists
3) Cars
Therefore if a pedestrian wants to meander down the middle of Bank Street from North Terrace to Hindley Street they can technically do just that, regardless of whatever vehicular traffic has to slowly follow behind them.
Because of the likely presence of slow moving pedestrians, over time the areas will become less attractive to car drivers and traffic levels should drop accordingly - thus making the area even more friendly to pedestrians.

Removing common vehicle traffic and restricting it to deliveries and essential services (i.e. professional drivers) will make it safer than it already is.
Remember Rundle Mall can still have vehicular traffic, though rare, and people manage.

Ever walked down Bentham St in peak? I do it every day. There are hundreds of people using it because it is the best route from the railway station to the market and anyone working on Hindley, Currie, Waymouth, Franklin or Grote uses that route. They walk wherever they want, and it's brilliant. There are less cars using it every day.

I don't think it makes any difference - the topic is shared spaces in general. The more the merrier I say.
Hailing from Europe originally I've seen many a crappy street be transformed into a vibrant and pleasant shared space. As per one of the posts above I don't buy into the argument that there's something inherently different about Adelaide or Adelaideans that means it won't work here. Eventually drivers will get used to it.

People are allowed to advocate for better things. Why are you entitled to tell someone to go back to Europe because they happen to like pedestrian friendly spaces?
While Australia may share some cultural aspects with the US, it's not like we're the car centric asphalt world they are. Sydney is building pedestrian spaces with George Street, and Melbourne has theres too.
