And dont forget the annoyances it brings to the west lakes residents paulns.

I used to live in west lakes shore and my family never used to leave the house when a footy game was on..... just wasnt worth the hassle.

The city is able to handle 50 thousand people..... west lakes isnt.

A NEW shop on East Tce, Tape Deck Razor Blade, will be selling a funky mix of clothes, coffee and records.

Co-owners Ben Smith and Alix Gannon say the shop's variety will be a first for Adelaide and in particular, they will be offering a range of clothes unlike any other shop.
Smith says most of the clothes will be shipped in from the UK, Amsterdam and Melbourne.
But the pair are also planning on commissioning local artists to come up with designs for T-shirts and more.
``It's stuff we've never seen before and with a very limited edition,'' Smith says.
They're looking to have their own organic coffee blend and there will be a wide range of tunes from the 1960s to today.
They will also be selling local talent through music label Bark Bang.
In other city moves and openings, Ming's Steamboat, on Morphett St, opened last weekend, with bookings already throughout this week.
In the words of Ziu Ming, his other restaurant in Gouger St, Ming's, is expected to stay ``100 per cent busy''. The new Steamboat will offer something different too with surprise steamboats cooking your meal at the table. Meantime, we hear Ross Stanley and crew from Electric Light Hotel, on Grenfell St, will be opening a restored and revamped Edinburgh Castle in Currie St. It's not going to be a dedicated gay pub but will be friendly to everyone and will be used as a Feast venue.

Even more reason to hope that the old church beside the new bus station becomes a live music/nightclub/restaurant/bar of some sort.

i disagree, i don't think something as holy as a church should be turned in to something like a nightclub, although i do support ALOT more of that life in the city, not at a church, (restaurant would be nice though)

Better not go to Church (the nightclub) then!

I think they should turn it into a strip club or even a brothel, just to upset the bible bashers. :)

Church the nightclub used to be a Synagogue.

Major boost to City student accommodation

Released: 09 Oct 2007 [12.00am]

A $47 million plan to build 260 student apartments in the City has been approved by the Adelaide City Council’s Development Assessment Panel.

Lord Mayor Michael Harbison says the Gouger Street project will deliver much needed housing for the increasing number of students choosing to live and study in the City.
“The Adelaide City Council and the State Government have had great success in attracting increasing numbers of students – especially from overseas - into the City to study at our tertiary institutions,” says the Lord Mayor.
“One of the great challenges to maintaining this growth is the availability of quality student housing, and this proposal delivers a significant boost to housing options available for those students considering a move to the City.”
The development involves 260 mainly one-bedroom student accommodation units on the eastern part of the site, as well as a gymnasium, library, cinema, tutorial rooms, a common kitchen and laundry, an outdoor courtyard and secure bicycle parking.
The proposal also includes more than 40 one and two bedroom residential apartments on the western side of the site, ground floor commercial tenancies, and 129 car parking spaces.
It’s proposed to use a combination of gas and solar energy to generate hot water through the building, while stormwater would be collected in 30,000 litre rooftop tanks to be used for the building’s toilets.

Meantime, the Council’s DAP has also approved a $40 million proposal to construct a 10-storey office and car park building at the corner of Wakefield Street and Roper Street in the City.
The development involves office space (with a commitment from the applicant to achieve a 5-star green rating for this component), a multi-level car park with more than 580 parking spaces, and the provision of around 80 bicycle parks and lockers on the ground level.

REDESIGNING Victoria Square, a Rundle Mall facelift and continuing the North Tce upgrade are the top priorities for re-elected Lord Mayor Michael Harbison.
He also wants to shape his final three-year term around attracting new city residents, building more student housing, upgrading Elder Park, wider cycle lanes and creating a Cabinet-style model for elected members.
Mr Harbison was narrowly re-elected on Saturday (October 20), relying on preferences to defeat Francene Connor by 127 votes 2884 votes to 2757.
He admits some of the items on his wish list will be unfinished dreams when he leaves Town Hall in 2010.

THE $20,000 competition to redesign Victoria Square is a cynical, cheap smokescreen, leading city architects say.
``Vic Square has become a joke,'' Royal Australian Institute of Architects SA president Andrew Vorrasi said.
``It's dragged out by every city council and state government every few years and nothing ever happens and no one takes it seriously.
``Everyone has finally got jack of Vic Square and you won't get any serious proposals until the State Government and the City Council work out what they want to do.''
The latest call for fresh ideas on how to reinvigorate the city's heart was made by the Government and the City Council in August.
The enticement a $10,000 prize for an all-encompassing design and a further $10,000 prize to redesign the former central tram stop has failed to spark much inspiration.
``It's not high on our agenda,'' said David Hassell, managing principal of Adelaide-based global architects Hassell. ``The main issue, and it is a bit cynical, is that these things tend to happen around an election.''
David Burton, one of three architects who recently released their vision for the inner-city's future, dubbed Adelaide 2050, said: ``(The competition) seems a bit of a smokescreen and it's not the way we would like to see planning happen in SA.
``There needs to be a lot more work done on a masterplan of the CBD, and the wider metropolitan area, before you can work out what to do with that little parcel of land.
``A $10,000 prize is peanuts for a site like that. If you were serious you would draw up a proper brief and get companies of international note interested.''
Previous ideas for the square include traffic tunnels, an underground car park, turning it into a market square and creating a plaza with a pavilion for special events.
Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said it wasn't only architects who came up with good ideas. ``We're quite happy for it just to be interested people and students,'' he said.

I'm sure we could also have members of the public performing surgery. We could save a fortune on surgeons. Maybe family members would feel more involved in the care of their loved ones if they got to cut out the cancer themselves. We could even offer a $500 prize for the person whose family member didn't die.

Architect's are not the only one's with good ideas but they are the only ones trained to manage all of the different requirements including traffic, services, engineering, sun, wind, rain, social interaction, urban design etc and bring them together in a resolved design.

Here's a novel idea Pat do Community Consultation BEFORE you decide on the final design. That way any community input can be taken on board from the start.

Haha, great analogy.

It's ridiculous, let alone embarrassing.

We're trying to hold ourselves out as an educated, sophisticated, important city, with great investment opportunities yet we're asking the general public to design the supposed heart of our CBD.

They could be just stealing our ideas because they want us to 'own' it or may be they cant work out any good ones themselves :lol: :lol:

I for one am tending back to greening Vic Sq. in the classic victorian formal style - kind of befits Victoria up there as a statue. This then to be surrounded with 'a central park' ring of suitable high rise - Eg re-furbished SGIC bldg.+ hotels.
They're getting the idea over there in Hindmarsh Sq.(Check out the Hines pics on 20 Hindmarsh Sq. thread).

L.C. House at the corner of Hindley and Blyth Streets has been sold for a little over $4 million. Rumours abound that the 1785sq m site is being prepared for a major apartment/ office development. Currently, L.C. House is home to small retail tenancies and a car-park.

Sounds interesting Will. I also know of another site in the CBD that is currently being investigated for a large apartment building (around 20 floors) but the height limits are very restrictive for the particular location so it probably won't ever see the light of day. Good to see developers and architects are really starting to aim higher in Adelaide.

Unfortunately I can't reveal any location, developer or architect details. It is strictly confidential at the moment, I would loose my job otherwise.
