It's great to see an example of an older office building getting repurposed for a different use. There are too many older office buildings in this part of the city that are mostly empty and look ugly at the moment.
Re: News & Discussion: General CBD Development
Good to repurpose an office building, but why do they need to make the rooms so small? Some of the hotel rooms are 23 sq m. They would be just awful.
It is such a pity that the Wyndham Grand across the road seems dead. That's the type of hotel that makes a difference to a city.

Probably the business model. Smaller rooms = more rooms = can target the cheaper end of the market.Prodical wrote: ↑Thu Apr 06, 2023 11:26 amGood to repurpose an office building, but why do they need to make the rooms so small? Some of the hotel rooms are 23 sq m. They would be just awful.

As far as I'm aware that's a pretty normal size for a hotel room world-wide

This is a great idea but what’s with the ones already being refurbished, going again? Would love to see others that are in much more need of a clean up, get a look in. I know this isn’t just a pick one to clean up scenario but I am loving this idea and I hope others follow suit
Re: News & Discussion: General CBD Development
Would guess that the ones which have already been refurbished are the ones that have owners who care about investing into the property, rather than just holding onto it.Mpol02 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 06, 2023 2:58 pmThis is a great idea but what’s with the ones already being refurbished, going again? Good adaptive reuse!
I had no idea this building was only half occupied. Has Westpac announced where they're moving?
I do wonder how they'll manage pick up / drop off with no adjacent loading zone (and being on high volume bus routes?)? Also wonder which hotel operator they have lined up and why the nearby Wyndham and Hyatt haven't started despite their commitment.

Page 4 of the development application shows that 6 levels of the building will still be office space, so I would assume that most of the building's current tenants will remain.
The building refurbishment plans look good and will be a big improvement to what's currently there.
If the Wyndham Grand development ever gets up directly opposite KWS, and with the 60 KWS new build right next door, this part of the city will be look completely different in years to come.

Yeah this. I prefer to stay cheap but not nasty. I use a hotel room for sleep, so my preference is newly refurbished suites without much care for the room size as long as the bed is big. Only time I go the other way is if I'm specifically choosing a spa retreat hotel.Nort wrote: ↑Thu Apr 06, 2023 12:10 pmProbably the business model. Yep.
Romantic getaway, go fancy.
Traveling for business or just need a place to sleep, I'd rather someone clean and professional but smaller that saves me cash.

I just stumbled across this video on YouTube - potential new development brewing at 195 North Terrace?

You'd think Commercial & General would be interested since they own the adjacent Galleries -- but then again, they've done nothing but kept it abandoned.Plasmatron wrote: ↑Sun Apr 09, 2023 2:30 pmI just stumbled across this video on YouTube - potential new development brewing at 195 North Terrace?

I've seen this thing listed over a period of years. Don't know if it's been on the market the whole time or if it's being turned over again.
