COM: Glenelg Tramline Upgrade
Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade
I won't go through all of it because the standard (AS1428.1) is 60 odd pages long.
From memory:
Doors must have a clear opening width of 800mm;
Paths must have a max gradient of 1:19
Ramps must have a max gradient of 1:14 & a max length of about 14m
Kerb ramps must have a max gradient of 1:8 & a max length of about 1m
Max gap or step in a path of travel of 6mm
AS 1428.1 also refers to AS1428.4 (Tactile indicators) the small coloured bumps you see at the platforms at the top & bottom of ramps & line up with the doors.

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade
Surely the Germans sent an instruction manual over with the Flexi's, of how to program the desto's up. Maybe its in German, which is why TA cant read it. Perhaps normangerman should help them out with the translation I only did German up until year 11 at school.

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade
I was told that the desto programming software is not released by the factory. If so, TA will have to send the required messages to Germany and get desto data back ready for installation.jk1237 wrote:Surely the Germans sent an instruction manual over with the Flexi's, of how to program the desto's up.

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade
About 8pm tonight, thanks to friend 'T' I reached Glenelg just in time to catch H Type 367 towing a very dark Flexity 109 back to the depot. I don't know what caused 109's problem.
Sorry about the quality of the shots. It was raining, dark, and I didn't have time to set up.
Anyway, you'll get the idea.
Just before sending this I saw a post on another list about a damaged pantograph on Flexy 108. Should make for interesting times on Monday!

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade
From what I have read on Railmedia, it appears that a tree branch was blown onto the overhead near Glengowrie depot (caused by the strong winds this arvo). The branch basically broke the panto at the mid section join. 101 towed 108 back into the depot.
Very interesting shots by the way Bill, especially with a 1 year old tram being towed by one 2 years shy of 80. Atleast unlike the NIMBYs who will probably jump on this, we are atleat smart enough to know that these things will happen from time to time.

Although my assumption is the pedestrian was probably to blame.A WOMAN has been hit by a tram on North Tce.
The woman in her 20s was hit by the tram on North Tce about 10.45pm last night.
She was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

I really just can't believe that you wouldn't demand you get the source code when you buy such an expensive thing.BillD wrote:I was told that the desto programming software is not released by the factory. Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade
Looks like the H-class trams will be forced back into service again for a bit.
Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade
Here are a couple of shots showing H 367 still coupled to Flexity 109 in the Glengowrie south yard after the previous night's recovery from Glenelg.
I've still not heard what the problem was with 109.

Another news article from the Sunday Mail:

If I remember corrently, wasn't part of the Advertisers/Liberals arguement against the tram extensionl, that it was an extension to no-where, and that people would not use it?
Now the Advertiser and the Liberals are having a whinge because the tram extension is a great success. What a joke. :wank: :wank: :wank: :wank: :wank:

The great tram jam

PEOPLE have been forced to hail taxis or take buses home because they are unable to board packed trams just days after the opening of the controversial $31 million tram extension.
Passengers are deserting peak-hour services because the system is buckling under unprecedented demand.
In an admission the service was running at capacity, TransAdelaide said it cannot run more trams because it would create traffic congestion as boom gates along the tramline would be continually lowered.
The Opposition has slammed the State Government for mismanaging the project and for buying trams with inadequate carrying capacity.
Belinda Sydor, 24, of Glenelg said that three times last week she was unable to board a tram from the city to Glenelg because they were too full.
"It has never been like that. You always had to stand before, but I have never not been able to get on the tram,"' she said.
"On Monday and Tuesday, I grabbed lifts with friends. This Tuesday I caught a bus home and last Friday I caught a taxi with strangers."
She wrote to TransAdelaide on October 15 – the day the extension began service – demanding extra carriages be put on during the peak period.
But TransAdelaide trams business analyst Kylie Clarke said this would not be possible.
"Unfortunately, due to road traffic laws we can not operate more trams during the afternoon peak than what we currently have," she said in an October 19 email seen by the Sunday Mail. "At a maximum, trams can only cross through boom gates at frequencies of five minutes.
"Operating trams at intervals less than this causes major traffic congestions at all boom gates and for this reason TransAdelaide are not permitted to increase the number of trams leaving the city during the PM peak."
She said TransAdelaide was not able to couple Flexity trams, as the carriages would overhang the platforms.
The State Government announced last week that tram patronage had increased 39 per cent in the first week of the extension from Victoria Square to North Tce.
Australian Rail Tram and Bus Union SA Branch organiser Ashley Waddell said the Government must "seriously consider" buying more or larger trams to ease the over-crowding problem.
TransAdelaide general manager Bill Watson said each of the 11 Bombardier Flexity Classic trams were being used in the morning peak and a similar move would be considered for the afternoon, during which 10 now operate.
The Flexity trams have a capacity of 179 passengers and cannot be joined together like the old H-Class trams. But Mr Watson said TransAdelaide was investigating lengthening the trams by putting an extra section in the middle of the vehicle.
Opposition transport spokesman Duncan McFetridge said the situation proved that the new trams were a bad choice.
Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said the Government was a victim of the trams' success. It would take several months to understand what was "permanent patronage and speculative patronage".
"What I would have got slaughtered for is if I bought too many trams and they weren't used," he said.
If I remember corrently, wasn't part of the Advertisers/Liberals arguement against the tram extensionl, that it was an extension to no-where, and that people would not use it?

since the operation of the extension, I've seen many acts of stupidity by pedestrians and tram travellers. Whilst waiting at the Pirie street stop, I saw a 2 mothers with prams and young children by thier side walking up the tram line after crossing halfway at currie st. The approaching tram was in sight and they were walking to the stop at a leisurely pace.
I also saw the same thing with a couple of elderly people.
Another concern is the lack of space at Rundle Mall stop, where it gets very busy and many ignorant people spill over onto the track waiting to cross the road, when the tram is about to leave the stop. Then when the tram sounds its bell, they are hardly phased and move back slightly where the tram passes them by a matter of centimetres.
With such acts, its not surpising that someone has already been hit.

Re: Glenelg Tram Line Upgrade
Well if we cant have any more trams running cos of this restriction...then what would happen it we decided to run another service down the corridor???
Say we branched a rail line off down marion road to replace M44 or something....we would have to make underpasses maybe because it would be impossible to not make trams come more than 5 min in peak hour with 2 services running through the corridor?
In all honesty, it would be quite feasible I reckon to cut and cover all roads with go zones to run light rail underneath. If we did sections at a time, the disruption would be not that bad. Maybe start with cut and covering the cbd roads that have light rail running through them doing sections at a time to save shit loads of time in entering and leaving the city. Obviously leave the corridor but maybe make underpasses at intersections.
Normans idea is great and most probably better, but would that idea be much more expensive considering we would have to tunnel underneath?
I would like to hear from someone who is in the know about these things what would be more cost efficient and the pros and cons of each?
