No. Quite a lot of new buildings in Adelaide have blank western walls which is where the lift core usually is as well.

Narrow sites (paricularly those with their frontage on an east or west boundary) tend to position their cores to the back.
It has a lot to do with site orientation, and where the primary frontage is.
Having said that, a squarer footprint will almost always position a core somewhat centrally, especially so in the case of office developments.
This is to do with efficiency of layout, and allows the wet areas to be positioned back to back with the core.

Cores in office buildings used to be in the middle in the past as this was the most structurally efficient way to do so.
Tenant requirements in recent years have changed this. Tenants are requiring larger open floorplates with better natural lighting, and as a result the core is usually on one side of the building in more recent developments. In hotels and residential buildings, putting the core in the middle still makes sense most of the time, as bedrooms require natural lighting and ventilation.

This is interesting stuff, and a fantastic photo above. In the wake of the September 11 attacks, I recall a documentary about the old World Trade Center and how it had large, open floors built around a central core, with its walls doing a lot of the load-bearing. Over at 60 King William Street (which will be my new office) the kitchens, lifts and toilets will be in a central core.

It's not exactly the most architecturally fancy building, but it is going up in one of the most prominent locations in all of Adelaide. It looks like the silhouette of the clock tower won't be affected much, which I think is important.

Yeah, from memory the dev app indicated a 'champagne' tint. But these are the lower levels, so potentially a different finish.

Seeing plants growing out of the GPO building's neoclassical facade reminds me of those paintings of Rome during the Renaissance, when ruins like the Colosseum were overgrown with weeds, sorry-looking remnants of a bygone age.

I'm wondering also, will this be a mixed use path for car traffic as well? Not sure if on site parking exists, or perhaps they will have a valet service?
there has to be somewhere car traffic/taxis can park to drop off customers for the hotel...
