As shown by one of the pics in the tramline thread the SGIC refurb has started. I drove past this one a few times today and didn't even notice, I must have been in another world :) Still no renders anyone? I hope it is a decent refurb as the building really stands out both west and east of the city and even from the south from certain prespectives. Not sure if it will get a tower crane or not. I suppose it depends on how fast they want to get the refurb done among other factors. Great to see this has started anyway.

Re-cladding this brown monolith in glass, will make a very big difference to the western skyline view. It will make the city look more modern.
I totally agree. It is so bland and colourless for such a prominant location. No neons either as far as i can see. Thus night presence is very poor.

It's close to being in the same category as the Education Department and Wakefield House for brown monolithic drudgery. At least it has windows, which is more than I can say for Wakefield, and it doesn't have the awful leprosy facade of EdDept.

The sooner the upgrade, the better - especially if attention is paid to the western side.

This one has really kicked into gear now. Waiting at the Victoria Square tram stop there was a lot of construction noise up there. I am a bit scared though, I think I spied some new green glass on about level 4, hopefully only a test. Please no more green glassed buildings in that area. City Central is enough. We need some more blue glassed buildngs in Adelaide imo, have some black ones, green ones but not many blues.

Yes unfortunatly the firm behind the refurbishment have been anything less then helpful especially when compared to their peers such as Hines and Pruzinski who go out of thier way to showcase thier work on this website. I think it's an opportunity lost to the developers personally. I have had much contact with them and to no avial.

Well thats a shame, because I am really curious too see how this will look

Its going to make a major impact and hopefully will make the city skyline 'modern' from the west and Victoria Square.

Now if only they could also add a few more levels to the building, considering it's extremely prominent location, then this renovation would suddenly become considerably better (taller and more modern looking). Anywhere between five and ten should do the trick.

Can anybody tell me how tall the building currently is?

It is way too early to tell and considering there is no render who really knows but some of the covers have come off parts of the building today exposing the new glass. Firstly it is green. How much more green glass do we need in this city? Secondly it is not curtain wall glass and I am not sure if they are actually getting rid of the balconies or not at this stage? The glass over the colums appers lighter a bit like City Central. This one could turn out ugly if first impressions are anything to go by. Anyway it is early days. I wish a render was floating around somewhere.

I was in the city earlier today and I caught a glimpse of the new glass. It is revolting, in fact I farted when I saw it.
