Proposed multimillion-dollar redevelopment for Thebarton Theatre

The Thebarton Theatre is set to receive a facelift if plans are approved to renovate the heritage-listed venue.

JPE Design Studio, on behalf of the West Torrens council, submitted plans to Planning SA to redevelop the western suburbs theatre.

The development includes a new main entry foyer and front-of-house area for patrons, while the iconic sign on the eastern wall of the theatre listing upcoming shows will be replaced with a digital LED screen.

The ground floor of the new main entry foyer will feature north and south entry doors, toilet facilities and access to the upper storey via a set of stairs and a lift.

The upper floor is set to feature more bathrooms, a seating area and a connection to upper-storey seating areas.

In 2021, the state government promised a $17m upgrade for Thebarton Theatre, including a new ground-level entry foyer, auditorium timber flooring and roof solar panels.

No extra seating in the auditorium is proposed.

Renovations will also be undertaken inside the theatre if plans are approved.

The walls within the stage area, existing entry foyer and assembly building will be patched and painted as required, the flooring of the theatre’s auditorium area will be replaced with hardwood timber and the bar area will receive a new fit-out.

The behind-the-scenes store will also be refloored to provide consistency with the remainder of the building.

The exterior of the theatre will also be repainted to update the condition.

A total of 37 parking spaces and 16 bicycle spaces to be available on site.

No third-party advertising is proposed for the new LED screen.

A proposed single-storey extension to the rear of the theatre would serve as the primary loading dock and feature a low-pitch skillion roof, roller door and pedestrian door.

The plans come after the theatre was scheduled to be demolished in the final stage of the North-South Corridor project.

However the theatre along with almost 500 homes were spared thanks to the decision to build two tunnels alongside South Rd instead.

The demolition plan by the former Liberal government sparked outrage and a campaign to protect it – with a video of then-premier Steven Marshall emerging in which he called for the theatre to “never be bulldozed”.

Pretty decent plans, good to see the old girl getting looked after. The new entrance will certainly be nicer for concertgoers than queueing on Henley Beach Road. Just hope the old foyer is creatively used.

Hindmarsh? It's in Torrensville. How clueless are the staff at AdelaideNow about their own city?

Isn't Thebby run by a private company? Why is the tax payer on the hook for $17 million that benefits a private company's operations?

Rightly or wrongly, because it’s a state heritage place.

Nevertheless wouldn’t be the first time a private company has received public funds, in many cases for far less worthy uses where the funds can basically go out of sight and down the drain.

Well if the money is being used exclusively for the council owned building great, hopefully though none of it finds it's way into the hands of the company that leases/runs Thebarton Theatre which appears to be a Weslo Holdings.
Appears they owed the council $100,000 in rent in 2020? And were placed in administration in 2015.

The electronic sign should also include a large video screen to promote performances and shows.

Slightly further down Henley Beach Road it looks like there might finally be some movement on the site opposite The Royal Hotel that's been empty for ages:

https://plan.sa.gov.au/development_appl ... 008332-DAP

45 apartments over five levels is pretty big for the area, the local residents will no doubt kick off about it but it is zoned Urban Corridor, is located at a bus stop with regular buses to the city etc, so if we're not putting medium density on this type of site, where exactly are we going to put it

This would be good. I first grew up on West Street and even when I was born the block was empty. My mum used to take our Rottweiler in there for a free run.

But yes, as a minimum it should be medium density. This would further support a future tramline down Henley Beach Road.

I agree it's good for the area, and will bring more activity to Henley Beach Road to support local businesses.

On that topic, last night walking past the Drakes supermarket at Torrensville and noticing again how large that site is. In any other capital a site like that so close to the CBD would have underground parking, a decent sized mall and several medium density (at least) residential towers above.

Noticed a few weeks ago that the last remaining section of the old SAMCOR works out at Gepps Cross has been bulldozed and replaced with a new IGA Distribution Centre. I remember seeing some fairly recent pics inside there before it got demolished and it looked to be a very interesting place to say the least.

Good example of the fucking idiotic bad faith that both sides of politics use when it comes to urban planning:https://indaily.com.au/news/2023/08/10/ ... velopment/
