Re: Commonwealth Games in Adelaide
Athletes don't need a village, they can stay in hotels. Sports competitions don't need spectators, they can watch on TV. Sports events are really cheap to run if all it is is a competition between athletes. Adelaide can host this without spending any money on more infrastructure. It's not going to be fancy, but it will work and if no other city wants to do it, there's no downside to hosting the games here if it's just a competition between athletes.
Re: Commonwealth Games in Adelaide
Exactly. It doesn't need to cost anywhere near what the Victorian games were going to cost, and I'm sure the Commonwealth Games organisers would be keen to do whatever they can do make it as cost neutral as possible to ensure the games go on.1NEEDS2POST wrote: ↑Fri Jul 28, 2023 6:36 pmAthletes don't need a village, they can stay in hotels. If there's one thing that Adelaide does spectacularly well, it's hosting events.

Didn't our Premier come home from holidays to assure us that this wouldn't happen?1NEEDS2POST wrote: ↑Fri Jul 28, 2023 6:36 pmAthletes don't need a village, they can stay in hotels. Even an athlete village doesn't have to be a loss - the state government says it wants to build "affordable housing" anyway.

Exactly, it's not like athletes villages are 5 star versace resorts.SBD wrote: ↑Sat Jul 29, 2023 2:59 pmDidn't our Premier come home from holidays to assure us that this wouldn't happen?1NEEDS2POST wrote: ↑Fri Jul 28, 2023 6:36 pmAthletes don't need a village, they can stay in hotels. They could be designed in such a way that they could be quickly repurposed for affordable housing.
In fact, why not have people purchase off the plan apartments that would be used first as part of the athletes village, maybe with the government/games organizers paying rent for them, and then they once the athletes clear out the owners can move in and/or rent them out? We have both a housing shortage and rental shortage.
Shame our politicians cant think outside of their boxes.
They have an army of staffers and pay millions to various advisory boards and consultants, and we still get served up the same shit with a different spin on it.

Maybe Adelaide can bid to host it in 2026 and 2030 https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-08-04/ ... /102688974
Re: Commonwealth Games in Adelaide
I think the event should be wound up permanently. It has lost its relevance since the professional year round athletics circuit in Europe has come into being many of the top athletes from Commonwealth nations give it a miss or don't prioritise it as an event to be in top form for. The English, the Canadians and the Jamaicans don't care about it. Its nothing more than a fapfest for Aussies to delude themselves into thinking they're world class once every 4 years.

I definitely agree with abc's anti-colonial sentiment, but would say the Olympics is heading in this direction as well. They are not economically feasible for most countries let alone cities.abc wrote: ↑Fri Aug 04, 2023 3:30 pmI think the event should be wound up permanently. It is from a bygone era with colonial roots. We are living in 2023 and trying to move on from those atrocities. Vote yes.

Re: Commonwealth Games in Adelaide
Considering how commercialised the Olympics have become, those same mega global corporates should contribute to the host cities instead of just paying the IOC.
They're benefiting greatly from the global coverage they receive.
And even a move to more sustainable practices with temporary stadiums, that could be reused from city to city. That would cut down costs and the issue of billion dollar stadiums sitting empty and unused.
Same could be applied to the Commonwealth Games.

I was summarizing the points for your argument which I agree wholeheartedly.abc wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2023 3:47 pmwhy are you misquoting my posts and adding your political views for an unrelated topic?HiTouch wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2023 3:03 pmI definitely agree with abc's anti-colonial sentiment, but would say the Olympics is heading in this direction as well. The appropriate place for a summary or agreement with a post is in the body of the reply and not by modifying the text of the quoted post. This keeps the contribution of individuals to a discussion clear.
