There was a piece in the 'Tiser today about how property prices in areas such as Alberton, Port Adelaide and Elthelton have sky-rocketed lately, and are now significantly above the Adelaide median.

Good point.

An ideal development would have integrated the old port with the new development in a much better way.

The NewportQuays/State Government/LMC development not only ignores the old port, it kills its potential for commercial expansion, eg tourism, by eliminating most public parking. As for the present low-level (ie half-arsed) revitalisation of the old port, that owes more to private warehouse renovators and business owners that LMC.

I asked LMC's Port Adelaide customer casinoAA whether they in fact had any interest in what was going on in the old port, and the young babe behind the counter said (almost verbatim) 'Not really, We're really more a multi-million dollar developer.''

That's not all bad, if you think about it.

I think its great. The redevelopment of Port Adelaide is yet another great step for Adelaide. Hopefully in the future we can proudly say the places to be in SA are Adelaide, Glenelg and Port Adelaide. At the moment the Port is very depressing.

Yep keep it coming full steam ahead make it outstanding and spectacular and watch it develope a soul. Make it a cultural hub, the popularity and vested interest is surely out there with this project, this has incredible potential it's a gold mine.

It won't for long this will no doubt snowball onto the more historic part of town, that nimby's are concerned about in regards to loosing its heritage. It will probably enhance the history and heritage infact. There are old warehouses developers are dying to buy and do up, restaraunts and cafe's will have to pop up to cater for more residents, as well as specialty shops and boutiques. Comercial road can look potentially more impressive than the Parade Norwood, and then there's Port Road. This is wider than Anzac highway and can be beautifully landscaped with underground powerlines and the tram running down the middle all the way to Adelaide, making a majestic entrance to the Port. This is the making of something magnificent with so much interest from developers and from some of the general public that can see this vision. If we really do want this we have to make it happen and the oportunity is now.

Its a waste of money implementing a tram sevice along port road. We have a rail corridor like 100m away, just use that for light/heavy rail?

A tram is better for tourism the train can still function, you have and can create a more scenic route via tram travel. Long term popularity will pay off. The train can go further, having both is no disadvantage.

Whats so scenic about port road??

I think people would rather catch a tram knowing they are gonna get to pt adelaide faster, hence why they should just use the existing corridor. Using port road means the trams will stop at lights all the time unless they put underpasses which will be a waste of money.

Having a tram down the median of Port Road would be a step in the wrong direction, I'm afraid. There are cross-overs every couple of hundred metres all the way to the port, so:

a) you put ding-dongs at every cross-over
or
b) you restrict tram speed to slow enough to stop at very short notice because of dickheads who will not look out for trams.

a) is too expensive and b) means less people will use the service, except to go short distances.

If a tram is to use the median on Port Road I think there will have to be 2 seperate tramways, each running at the very edge of the median, right by the road (like in Victoria Square) where drivers will be more likely to look for them before crossing into the carriageway. Of course drivers will only look to their left for traffic, necessitating 2 seperate tram corridors.

I havent used the term "ding-dong" for a rail crossing since I was 5...very amusing!!

But yeah it would be a waste of money....money that could had gone towards maybe making an underground corridor to an area that needs one cos there arnt any nearby (eg norwood).
