Kangaroo Island ranked among the world's best
October 30, 2007 09:05am
SOUTH Australia's Kangaroo Island has been named the best island in the Asia Pacific region in avoiding tourism overkill, according to the latest issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine.
The survey also ranked Kangaroo Island seventh out of 111 across the world and ahead of more iconic tourist destinations including the Hawaiian islands, the Greek islands, Tasmania, the Maldives and Fraser Island.
The top score went to the Faroe Islands, off the coast of Denmark.
A panel of 522 experts ranked the islands by comparing their commitment to sustainable tourism and preserving the environment.
Comments from the judges included describing Kangaroo Island as pristine.
"Recent tourism development has been sensitive to the environment, and some of the natural areas on the island are still in excellent condition," one judge said.
South Australian Premier Mike Rann said Kangaroo Island was widely regarded overseas as Australia's version of the famed Galapagos Islands, with easy access to native wildlife and spectacular forms of nature.
"This accolade demonstrates the success of sustainable tourism development on the island," Mr Rann said.
"The island's natural attractions are now being packaged together with its world-class food and wine to create an incredible holiday experience."

I disagree. The natural beauty of KI is amazing. Its an unspoilt wonder with plenty to do. There's great activities and accommodation, the locals are extremely friendly, the food is unreal and the beaches are among the best in Australia (Vivonne Bay rated the best).Diamondov wrote::wank:

What is so good about the Greek Islands?

Natural beauty is fair enough, but apart from that, there isn't much else.
Greek islands you ask?...

Re: KI ranked among the world's best!
It really is a worthless obscure award and talking it up like it's a major achievement is why the east coast laughs at SA.
Re: KI ranked among the world's best!
If Tasmania is a state of australia how canit also be classed as an island?crawf wrote: The survey also ranked Kangaroo Island seventh out of 111 across the world and ahead of more iconic tourist destinations including the Hawaiian islands, the Greek islands, Tasmania, the Maldives and Fraser Island.
anyway Kangaroo Island owns the greek islands!!!
Re: KI ranked among the world's best!
The Faroe Islands are nowhere near close to being "off the coast of Denmark". Just instils you with confidence in the rest of the article, doesn't it?crawf wrote: The top score went to the Faroe Islands, off the coast of Denmark.

Re: KI ranked among the world's best!
Thanks for the photos, but I’ve been there a few times and found the islands to be bland and baron. Most people are pretentious and after being around the area, it's no different to the rest of Mediterranean Europe (places like Cyprus, Turkey, Malta, Sicily etc).Diamond wrote:Natural beauty is fair enough, but apart from that, there isn't much else.

I'm sure I could dig up some photos of KI to rival what you have posted.
Keep in mind that this award was based more on environmental merits than anything else and a decision as to what constitutes the best island is purely an individual choice.

Foreign Correspondent did a story on the Faroe Islands a few weeks ago. It looks like an amazing place.SRW wrote:The Faroe Islands are nowhere near close to being "off the coast of Denmark". Just instils you with confidence in the rest of the article, doesn't it?
Re: KI ranked among the world's best!
It is a achievement, Kangaroo Island wasn't rated the most popular island for tourists, but for its commitment to sustainable tourism and preserving the environment.Bulldozer wrote:It really is a worthless obscure award and talking it up like it's a major achievement is why the east coast laughs at SA.
So I say well done KI

Baron landscapes and all that aside, it all comes down to personal taste. You want to party non stop during the summer and have a holiday that goes off? Greek Islands and the Mediterranean. You want to admire green grass and unspoilt landscape and enjoy a quiet get away, Kangaroo Island.
You can't compare two things which aren't in the same league, not saying that KI is crap, but its a different sort of place. It attracts people for different reasons to why the Greek islands do. Both have their negatives and both have their positives.
I think these sorts of awards or rankings are stupid and pointless. Adelaide is ranked, apparently, as one of the best places to do business in. Yet how many corporate headquarters of national, international or multinational corporations do we have?
This is just one more of those "we have something world class we can boast about" things, but at the end of the day people, we have nothing to show for it as a state.

One could ask what is so good about Kangaroo Island.
What can you do on Kangaroo Island, that you cant do on the Greek Islands?...or a more suitable question would be, what can you do on the Greek Islands that you cant do on Kangaroo Island? The answer is a hell of a lot.
You say KI has one of the best beaches in the country, well the Greek Islands have some of the best beaches in Europe. Infact there are 430 Blue Flag beaches in Greece, more then any other country in the Blue Flag programme in Europe. Blue Flag beaches are awarded on the following criteria:
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND INFORMATION
WATER QUALITY
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
SAFETY AND SERVICES
But like I said above, its all about personal choice. If people require another persons opinion, then they deserve to have a crap holiday. Personally Iv been to both KI and the Greek Islands, KI was boring(maybe due to it being a school camp?), the Greek Isles went off.

Re: KI ranked among the world's best!
KI is a unique place where you can escape the rat race and discover some of the most stunning scenery in the state or even Australia, try the best tasting local made honey (forgot the name of the bees), get back to nature and discover seals, penguins, kangaroos, koalas etc... (the island is free of pests such as foxes and rabbits!), take a dip or go surfing in some of the best beaches in SA, taste some of the local wines, meet and greet the colourful characters of the island, dine in the fabulous restaurants or pubs and have some tasty local seafood and much more... and its only just 2 hours from Adelaide!
Yes I can see why people would find KI boring compared to other destinations, but there still alot of people love what KI has to offer. IMO Kangaroo Island has to be the underrated gem of South Australia and with the island being praised for their commitment to sustainable tourism and preserving the environment - I think its a very good achievement for KI.
Aswell as the rest of the state (such as Adelaide), KI has seen a rise in domestic and international visitors to the island and with the 6-star eco resort not far from completion - the island will continue to lure people to this stunning place.

Nice pics. Alot of the beaches & landscapes appear quite similar for 2 different parts of the world.
