I am surprised Big W hasn't open in the mall, i know Woolworths used to have a variety store bit on ground level.

Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail
With Kmart already in the Mall and Target across the street, I don't think there would be room for Big W as well.
Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail
Shame they didn't repaint the building while they replaced the awning and fitted out Glassons.

The golden features don't look that bad.
However, the new parapet blocks natural light that was newly (temporarily) let into the tenancies here.

Last week, Off Ya Tree on Hindley Street closed its doors without warning after 50 Years.

Another Reddit user:Former manager here, hi!
I stepped down last week to go to a new job and thank goodness I did. But yeah we found out at lunchtime today that the store was closing permanently from 3, and that’s literally all I know. Three other stores interstate closed today too, making I think 6 in total so far this year.
They’ve told us nothing, and I honestly doubt they will, but the store was losing massive amounts of money because we were just dead. The location meant there wasn’t much in the way of foot traffic and there wasn’t a whole lot of marketing so we weren’t reaching new customers and you can’t pay the rent with nostalgia. Either way the rest of the staff are now out of jobs - and most were casual so they’ll get nothing.
I worked there for 4 years. They’ve closed 8 stores over the last couple of weeks as they’re going bankrupt. They have been in talks with the union about underpaying staff, poor treatment and incorrect award rates. From what I’ve heard they have sold the company and are more than likely to be going into liquidation soon

Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail
Up close during the day it still looks pretty bad, but at nighttime quite good.

Leaving the yellow window trim is just a bizarre brand of half arsedness, isn't it?

Re: News & Discussion: CBD Retail
Whilst I really loved the original building I decided to reserve judgement on the Myer Centre upgrade until it was complete as, in general, I've found some of the more initially controversial proposals over the years have actually turned out OK in the grand scheme of things (the Yugo student building on North Terrace for example).
However, although the centre looks OK from afar and at night, up close during the day it just looks half-arsed and cheap at anything beyond a casual glance. I presumed the facade would be fairly extensively replaced but instead it's just been painted dark grey and had a screen strapped to the front of it to disguise the building behind. It harks back to the cheap cover-up jobs that were done on Victorian or Deco buildings back in the 60s/70s and I thought we'd moved on from there (the old LC House on Hindley Street that the Holiday Inn replaced springs to mind).
Perhaps to someone who never saw the original Myer Centre it might look OK but to anyone local it's obvious that this was done with the least possible effort or expense. The retaining of the original window frames and green-tinted glass sticks out like a sore thumb.
I don't know why they didn't take a leaf out of Rundle Mall Plaza's book and go for a more comprehensive replacement of the facade or, if they had to cheap out, design a screening that would hide more of the underlying original building.
It's 3/10 from me.

doesn't look very inviting for a retail/department store
