Adelaide North Transport Study
We are undertaking a transport study for northern Adelaide inner and outer suburbs to inform future transport planning and investment in the region.
The study will consider key issues and opportunities to improve transport, such as road safety and efficiency, and its ability to support liveability, and population and economic growth.
The study area consists of the inner and outer northern suburbs of Adelaide, from Prospect to Roseworthy and Buckland Park to Humbug Scrub.

The speed limit on Tapleys Hill Road between Africaine Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive will be reduced from 80 to 60 from Friday 31 May.

No point, there are few side streets and the road is wide. If they want to do something, lower it between Harbour Town and Glenelg. Some people regard all speed limits are unnecessary. It's clear that the people who understand these things have decided there is sufficient reason to change it. They say it will improve safety and reduce crashes, based on modelling and reviews. I drive through here regularly and you can rarely get up to speed anyway due to people merging poorly or otherwise being unaware or unsure of the limit. I can see how a consistent 60 would be safer.SBD wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 6:47 pm

I didn't say I support or oppose the change (it would be years since I drove there, and months since I was last a passenger there). I said that the experts consider there is enough evidence to support the change, and I don't have any evidence to contradict them.

I've always thought it's dodgy having unsignalled entrances/exits to Harbour Town on an 80km/h road. It's very difficult to pull out safely here when traffic is heavy and I've seen people taken unnecessary risks on many an occasion.
It's a 2km stretch with a number of turn offs/intersections (and likely more with the new businesses opening on the western side) - it seems pretty reasonable and inconsequential to reduce the speed limit slightly.

I can't disagree but I've always thought it was weird to have this random short stretch of 80 km/h road stuck essentially in the middle of suburbia. It doesn't really service any particular purpose and, from my experience, it just tends to confuse metropolitan-based drivers who rarely have to encounter anything over 60 km/h in their daily commutes.
Coupled with the regular (and pretty enticing) visual distraction of a huge plane flying 20m directly overhead and it seems sensible to keep the speed limit low.

Adelaide traffic planners need to rediscover the 70km/h speed limit, for that section around Harbourtown, as well as the section of SDB between May Terrace and Tapley's Hill Road.

Interestingly, one of the main arguments which comes up nearly every time a council wants to reduce a speed limit (i.e. the introduction of 40km/h zones) is that "it's confusing for drivers to have to navigate multiple different speed limits on the same stretch of road".
In fact, "driver confusion" around changing speed limits was quoted as one of the main reasons behind scrapping the Hutt Street 40km/h trial a few years ago - see: https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/sou ... 3bcf429ff4.
I personally have absolutely no issue with different speed limits applying to different sections of the same road (because that's what road signs are there for) but if you listen to the RAA and other motoring advocates it's apparently something that confuses lots of drivers so this change should make navigating their cars through this tricky stretch of road much easier for them.
