I'd prefer LA or San Fran, but San Diego is the naval hub and currently has no air connection with Australia. Could be a mutual fit.

Adelaide Airport should aim for which ever US city has the better connections with other major US destinations. Think that would play a big part in making a direct connection with the US successful long term once the novelty wears off.

Honolulu might be a better destination than LA or San Fran because it's closer and has almost the same connectivity to all major US cities. It has much better connectivity than Brisbane/Sydney/Melbourne.

Whilst the raw data may suggest that a direct service to the US might be viable, I wouldn't underestimate the flying public's preference for particular airlines and their associated loyalty programs.

Personally, regardless of who offers a potential direct Adelaide - US service, if it doesn't align with my preferred airline loyalty program, I have no issue making a stop in MEL / SYD / BNE / AKL / NAN / HNL to maximise earnings or use points for upgrade options.

they sent delegations to Australia, they're specifically interested in adding flights to Brisbane for the Olympics

That's why its a hub on the west coast of USA.

California as a whole has a huge population. As rev stated earlier it's what city has the best connections from the west coast to the rest of North America (that means including Canada and perhaps Mexico and Central America). Prime candidates are LAX and SFO, but don't discount HNL with onward journeys to mainland USA. That's what we should aim for but it is up to whichever airline flies here out of the big three and Hawaiian where they fly to.

Pretty big demand on the Adelaide-Delhi route. I wonder if direct flights on that route might be something we could realistically pursue now that Air India has switched to a strategy of trying to build Delhi into a Gulf-style global transfer hub.

Just some food for thought. Check out these increases for outbound tourist spending (in the billion USD) from the three highlighted in particular the UK.

is that adjusted for inflation which has gone up dramatically in the west since the great reset?

“In terms of New Delhi, Tokyo and Los Angeles, they’re our three biggest markets or cities that are currently not directly served where you’ve got large flows of people travelling between already,” he said.

“They are destinations that we are absolutely confident would make money for those airlines tomorrow.

“Our priority is to re-establish routes from pre-Covid times, just as we have done with Emirates, and to develop new routes connecting our state to South East Asia, China, the United States and Japan.”


Also, in regards to QANTAS international returning to Adelaide:

“We would absolutely love the national carrier flying internationally from the Adelaide market, and we do believe that Qantas itself would also love to be flying internationally from the Adelaide market,” Mr Cox said.

“Really what we’re waiting for at the moment, and what Qantas is waiting for, is new aircraft deliveries that will enable Adelaide to be served by Qantas more cost effectively and also in a way that is right-sized for our market.”

It WILL be San Fransico.

United have always started off a new pacific route with SF.

Its not like there's another US carrier wanting to come to Adelaide right now, its just United, so it will be SF.

SF provides a lot of connections, so people who want to go to LA just need to hop on a short flight to LAX

The airport is currently at 923,732 international passengers per year, as at March 2024. Still a bit of work to go to get back over the million mark we had before the pandemic.

Domestic traffic is at 6,711,094 annual passengers as at March 2024, also very close to the pre-pandemic number of 7,306,666.
