[U/C] New Adelaide Aquatic Centre | $135M

Really like the 70s vibe if it’s done well. 70s I terrors May be in now but they also are quite timeless if done well. The natured wooden finishing will look great

I quite like the interiors. The main thing for me though is the layout of the centre, particularly the change rooms relative to the pools.
I agree about the outdoor pools. I prefer indoor pools even in summer, but I accept that they'll probably be popular with most for 4-5 months of the year.

You can tell that the person doing the drawings has never spent any time at an actual public pool - the picture of the outdoor paddling pool shows children playing in the full sun. No parent will allow that. All those kids would be (quite rightfully) under the shady bit! Which brings me to my point - it's fine if they are going to have outdoor pools, but there should be much greater shade cover than shown in the drawings (especially any paddling / kids pools - they should be 100% shaded, no question)

I think for me the balance is wrong - I'd prefer the bulk of the shallow splash areas being indoors with a smaller presence outside which could then be fully shaded, whereas this set up looks like the smallest splash pool will be indoors. I would have hoped that for $135M it would have been possible to shade more or all of the outdoor kids pool - perhaps with some sort of louvered option which could be opened on lower UV or cooler days.
Given that I live so close to the centre we'll most likely still take the kids there but I'd definitely choose a shaded or indoor pool over an open-air option on anything other than those rare spring/autumn days when the temperature is high but the UV still relatively low.
Again, the current arrangement of having indoor pools but with the ability to completely open up the external walls to create what is essentially a fully shaded outdoor space is pretty ingenious.

Not bad overall. I think if executed properly, it can make for a decent centre.
However, I still think it is in the wrong location, and should be located south-east, closer to O'Connell Street to take advantage of a future tramline.

Looks like a rec centre in far flung urban sprawl suburbia.Llessur2002 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 30, 2023 9:58 am

Carpark retained, building demolished and returned to parklands as far as I know.

Pretty sad to see - my kids have had some great times there and the building itself was pretty unique in my opinion.
